This scenic course takes half marathon run- ners along a hilly route through commercial and residential neighbor- hoods with challenging peaks midway through the race. The 5K starts and ends in the same lo- cation as the half mara- thon, but splits to take a different course close to the start of the race. The routes once again merge during the last leg of the race, which take runners along the scenic Jasper Riverwalk. The team challenge is a relay comprised of a four-person team and fol- lows the same course as the Heartland Half Mar- athon. The first runner in the relay will travel 3.8 miles, then pass along his/her timing chip to the second runner. The second runner will then run 4.05 miles and pass along the chip. The third runner will run 2.5 miles, and final runner finish- es off with the remaining 2.75 miles. The registration fee for the half marathon was $ 60 if registered by Aug. 13. Junior Lillie Pancake placed 18th with a time of 27:45; and senior Brittany Young placed 23rd with a time of 29:14. As a team, Pike Central scored a total of 39 points, one point behind first-place finisher Southridge's 38. Heritage Hills was third with 49 points. In the boys' race, junior Draven Huff placed fourth out of 46 runners with a time of 18:18, just one sec- ond ahead of Southridge freshman Cameron Giles, who placed fifth with a time of 18:19. "For the second year in a row, Draven led our boys in this race," Roach said. "He ran just behind the lead pack the whole race and out-sprinted Giles at the very end to take fourth place." Freshman Ijaa Cham- bers, meanwhile, placed sixth with a time of 18:45, while senior Caden Arm- strong finished seventh with a time of 18:46. "Ijaa and Caden were close to Huff the whole race as we packed together at the top very well again," Roach said. Freshman Colt Arm- strong was 13th with a time of 19:59; senior Gar- rett Manges was 19th with a time of 20 :28; and senior Jacob Bohnert was 20th with a time of 20 :34. Southridge fin- ished third with 55 points, followed by Springs Val- ley (97 points) and Shoals (131). "This race was a great early test for both teams as this is the course we will be running our con- ference race on this year," Roach said. "All day long, it kind of seemed like there was a high possibility we would get stormed out. It's very hard to get fully men- tally prepared if you aren't certain that you will be rac- ing. So, from that aspect, I was proud of the kids that they were ready to battle through the mental things that take you out of your routine and still come out and show improvement." Pike Central, which hosted North Knox on Tuesday, Aug. 29, will com- pete in the Alan Hopewell Invitational hosted by Gib- son Southern on Thursday, Aug. 31, before returning home to host North Da- viess, South Knox and Washington Catholic on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
