Poplar Street, Petersburg SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Tuesday, July 21, 1942 The State Board of Fi- nance voted unanimous- ly Wednesday to increase from $700 to $ 800 the an- nual state aid for each teaching unit in Indiana. Mrs. Wm. Robling and Mrs. Lon St. John cele- brated their birthdays at the home of Mr. and Mrs. St. Johns. at the noon hour a delicious dinner was served. The birthday cakes were baked by Mrs. Fern Ford, Terre Haute, Ind., Mrs. G. J. Webb, Sullivan, Ind., and Mrs. Blake Gra- ble. The annual Sunday School Picnic of the Wilson Creek Baptist church will be in the Barlow Grove, near the church July 30. The Everready class will have charge of all the ar- rangements this year, and are planning to make it one of the biggest and most profitable ever held. A farewell dinner was given at the Hornady Park, Sunday for Robert Fair, who will leave soon for ser- vice in the Army. The after- noon was spent in conver- sation and taking pictures. Mrs. Frank Fine of Win- slow gave a pink and blue shower at her home Friday evening for Mrs. Fred Col- vin. Mrs. Colvin received many lovely gifts. Bridge was the main diversion of the evening and was played at three tables. Pink and blue color scheme was carried out in the delicious dessert course served to Mrs. Tom Marsee, Mrs. Fred Neal Jr., Mrs. Fred Neal, Mrs. William Al- len, Mrs. Helen Coleman, Mrs. Jim Gross, Mrs. My- ron Whitelock, Mrs. Pat Queen, Mrs. John Steer, Mrs. Harold Johnson, and the guest of honor, Mrs. Fred Colvin. Marriages: A clipping from the Midlan, Texas paper received by Mr. and Mrs. Willard McClure, Tuesday, carried the an- nouncement of the mar- riage of their son Bert to a Texas girl; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tisdale of Winslow an- nounce the marriage of their daughter, Juanita to Mr. Carol Wood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Woods of Winslow. Deaths: Oren Delmas Abell died Sunday evening at 7:30 o'clock at the home of his parents, in Campbell- town, following an illness of eight years of silicosis. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday, July 19, 1957 George White, of Logan township, was painfully in- jured at about 2:30 p.m. Fri- day when he was thrown from a tractor-drawn mow- ing machine while mowing the horse lot on the fami- ly place about 10 miles from Petersburg. White suffered a severe cut from the center of his forehead to the right temple which required fifty stitches, oth- er face injuries, and multi- ple body bruises. Delmas Wyatt, promi- nent Petersburg business man, was elected by the City Council Monday night to a three year term on the Petersburg School Board to fill the vacancy created by the completion of over nine years service on the board by Beecher Conrad. Rev. Herschell Williams of the Free Methodist Walnut Grove church will preach this morning and evening services, Sun- day, July 21, and Rev. John Ricks of Washington will conduct morning and eve- ning services, Sunday, July 28, at the Petersburg Free Methodist church. Trustee Isaac T. Barrett announces the teachers for Spurgeon School of Mon- roe Township, Pike Coun- ty. Principal, Dallas Fer- guson, Dona Belle Hunley, Howard Mason, Kenneth Hunley, Frank Spradley, Haskell Woolsey, Gladys Dyson, Clara Ferguson and Jack Skinner. Mr. Skinner will be the new basketball coach. He was a star while playing for Spurgeon and has played one year for Oakland City College. Births: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Evans of the Rumbletown vicinity, a boy, Saturday. Deaths: Funeral servic- es were conducted at 10 :30 a.m. Thursday for Danny Woodall, 6, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Woodall, who died at 7:20 p.m. Monday in shallow waters of Lake Lawrence; Funeral servic- es for Gertrude Goodrid, 75, will be at 2 p.m. today, July 19, at the Harris Fu- neral Home; Funeral Ser- vices for Grace Dephew Blemell, 69, of Otwell were at 10 a.m. Monday, July 15, at the Harris Funeral Home. Hayes, has been appointed by the U.S. State Department to receive a Fulbright Grant as an exchange teacher to the United Kingdom. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, July 30, 1992 An Oakland City teen was arrested Thursday af- ternoon in connection with the attempted rape of a ru- ral Pike County woman while she was walking on the Line Road. Timothy D. Kidd, 19, of Oakland City was arrested at about 3 p.m. Thursday, July 23 in Winslow following an inter- view by State Trooper Paul Bastin and Winslow Town Marshal Steve English. This year the parade and unmarching band at the Zoar Mosquito Fest will move. It may not seem like earth shattering news, but Life magazine thought it was hot enough of an item to include in a feature on festivals throughout the United States. A Winslow woman was seriously injured Friday af- ternoon when the car she was driving slammed into a car that had been pulled in front of her. Brenda Rich- ardson, 37, of Route 1, Win- slow is in serious condition at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. She was re- turning from Mooresville, where she had driven Don Groves, 33, of Winslow to a medical clinic. Lisa Rowe of Petersburg waits as an Indiana State Police inspector looks un- derneath her bus in prepa- ration of the start of school this fall. Of the 44 buses in- spected, 11 passed, 27 did not pass because of minor infractions, and six were out of service. A reinspec- tion is scheduled for Mon- day, Aug. 3. The annual in- spection precedes the start of school which in Pike County is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 20. A house in Spurgeon was damaged by fire last Thurs- day night when a cooking fire spread throughout much of it at about 8:30. Spurgeon Fire Chief Ray Brooks said much of Steve and Cathy Harker's house was "gutted" by fire and other rooms sustained heavy smoke damage. He said they were able to con- trol the fire quickly once they arrived. Many of the fireman had just left a 911 meeting in Petersburg and were able to get to it quick- ly.
