B-2 Sports Wednesday, August 30, 2017 The Press-Dispatch Lady Chargers shut out visiting Tell City, 7-0 Sophomore Chloe Roy scored three goals and se- nior Taylor Deffendoll add- ed two more to lead the Pike Central High School girls' soccer team to a 7-0 victo- ry over visiting Tell City on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Also scoring goals for the Lady Chargers – who improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Pocket Athletic Conference – were junior Kelsey Barrett and sopho- more Morgan Houchins. Barrett also had two as- sists and Deffendoll and Roy had one each, while sopho- more goalkeeper Jenna Hor- rall registered five saves. "The girls are passing and communicating very well," Pike Central head coach James DeCrane said. "I am also very happy with how hard our defensive line is working. They are running hard and working hard." "For me as a coach, the most important thing I want to see is improvement in the players – working collec- tively and also improving in- dividually," DeCrane added. "I am seeing that improve- ment on both of those lev- els. I hope to see continued improvement as the season progresses." The victory was the sec- ond in as many nights for the Lady Chargers, who defeated host Washington Catholic 5 -1 on Tuesday, Aug. 22. Barrett netted three goals and Deffendoll and senior Breana Cowan scored one goal each to lead Pike Cen- tral. Horrall had two assists while Cowan, Houchins and Roy added one apiece. DeCrane credited the victory to "some spectacu- lar saves from Jenna Horrall and a defense that worked extremely hard." On Thursday, Aug. 24, the Lady Chargers – playing their third match in as many nights – dropped a 4-0 loss at Evansville Day School. "While losses are not easy to take, there was still a silver lining," DeCrane said. "We only allowed one goal in the second half, so we came back stronger." "Jenna had some spec- tacular saves in goal," De- Crane added. "The girls still passed well. We'll take this loss and move forward." On Saturday, Aug. 26, Pike Central – playing its fourth game in five days – was shut out for the second consecutive match in a 7-0 loss at Vincennes Rivet. The Lady Patriots scored five of their goals during the first half, and netted only two more the second half. Horrall, in goal for the Lady Chargers, recorded 24 saves. "We improved the second half," DeCrane said. "We've just played two of the tough- est teams, in a row, for a to- tal of four games. We are going to regroup and come back strong next week. Our passing is good and our communication is improv- ing." Pike Central, which slipped to 3-2, hosted South Spencer on Tuesday, Aug. 29. The Lady Chargers will play at Boonville on Thurs- day, Aug. 31, before return- ing home to host Prince- ton at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7. Boyd netted the Char- gers' eighth first-half goal – off an assist by Kyson Western –with 9:24 left in the opening half. In the second half, Kyson Western netted two more goals and Tyler Meadors, Scott and Vest scored once each as the Chargers ex- tended their lead to 13-0 with 7:26 remaining. "We have to come out and play well like that to start off games, and we have the last couple of times," Chad Western said. "Several guys played well, includ- ing Kabrick, Boyd, (senior Cameron) Henson, Booker and both (seniors) Kaleb and Quade Claridge." On Tuesday, Aug. 22, Pike Central posted an 11- 0 victory at Washington Catholic. Kyson Western led the Chargers with three goals while Booker, Boyd and Tyler Meadors netted two each. Holder and Scott had one goal apiece. Getting credit for as- sists were Henson, Holder, Kabrick, Tyler Meadors, Scott and Kyson Western. "All of our players were able to play in the second half, and we allowed a late goal with a lot of our young- er players in the game," Chad Western said. "We played well, and got a lot of chances to score. There was great play from Tyler Meadors, Austin Holder, Ethan Scott, Henson, Book- er and Tyler Tormohlen." Pike Central, which im- proved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Pocket Athletic Conference, hosted South Spencer on Tuesday, Aug. 29. The Chargers will trav- el to Boonville on Thursday, Aug. 31, and to Princeton on Saturday, Sept. 2, before re- turning home to host South Knox at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5. In a junior varsity match played at Evansville Day School on Thursday, Aug. 24, the host Eagles won 1-0. "This was a well-played matchup and we had sev- eral chances to get the first score, but gave up a late goal to them," Chad West- ern said. "A lot of guys played very well, and Car- son Johnson was all over the field winning balls for us." "Jacob Barber played well and had a lot of shots on goal, and Connor Young, Garrett Boyd and Hunter Capehart all had several opportunities created and shots that could have given us the lead," Chad Western added. "It was a good game for us to compete and have a chance to win."
