The "sidewalk-chalk" cartoon was a particular standout. Second place Gene Herndon Kokomo Tribune Comments: Witty, funny; great use of trendy topics. Third place No award given. Best Editorial Cartoonist/nondaily No awards given. Editorial Cartoonist James W. Brown, a pioneer, a cheerleader and a great asset to journalism while leading the program at IUPUI, has been heavily involved in photography and multimedia. He pushed professional journalists as well as his students toward innovation with video and audio. Always on the cutting edge, he willingly shares his knowledge with newspapers across the state. This award honors an innovation or initiative launched within the contest period that seeks to reach new readers or audiences using any resources available to the newsroom. This award may or may not be given annually at the judges' discretion. Brown winners 2009 – The Indianapolis Star, Digital Dashboards to connect reporters with their audiences 2010 – The Indianapolis Star, "John Wooden: The Indiana Story," a revenue-producing tribute video 2014 – The Elkhart Truth, Flavor 574 Flavor 574 staff The Elkhart Truth F lavor 574 is a new brand launched by The Elkhart Truth in April 2014. Its core offerings include Flavor574. com, a website updated daily with restaurant news and features about our region's unique food culture, and a quarterly digital magazine geared toward readers who like to immerse themselves in rich storytelling and interactive content. The Truth newsroom and advertising staffs started Flavor 574 because we recognized that readers of The Truth were highly engaged with food-related content we were publishing once a week in the newspaper and online. On a larger scale, we saw a lot of movement in the region toward independent restaurants and local food producers. With Flavor, we bring our existing readers more of what they love in a new and exciting format while reaching new audiences topically and geographically. Early results are promising, as we regularly receive more than 1,000 page views per day on Flavor574.com, and we recently exceeded 200 downloads on our first digital magazine. Presenting Flavor 574 as its own brand allows us to use a design and tone that appeals to those who may not be traditional newspaper readers without alienating those who are fiercely loyal to it. Building it first for digital platforms, rather than repurposing content produced for print, allows us to create a much more cohesive and welcoming experience for our readers. We encourage you to spend a few moments exploring Flavor574.com to get a feel for the look and tone that sets this new brand apart from The Elkhart Truth and engages new audiences, while preserving the quality and depth that our community trusts us to deliver.
