Sports Tuesday, December 20, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times B-2 Lady Titans blowout Pike Central By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern High School Girls' Kyle Brasher used all 11 of his Lady Titans in Petersburg Thursday eve- ning in a Pocket Athletic Con- ference (PAC) match-up with Pike Central, and seven of them scored in a 53-16 victory over the host Lady Chargers for Gibson Southern's seventh win in 10 outings. "I know we beat them by a lop-sided score," admitted Brasher in a post-game inter- view in Charger Gym, "but they are very well coached. "Trey Wornica has done a great job with a very young basketball team. "They are well-organized, and they ran their offense throughout the entire 32 min- utes of the game. They just did not shoot the ball very well, but that will change with ex- perience over the next year or two. "I thought we played well again tonight in all phases of the game. We defended well in our half-court defense, and on the offensive end of the floor, I thought we took good shots and looked for each other on every possession. "We had Gabby (Spink) back for the second time this year, after she missed the first eight games with the stress fracture, but we are still miss- ing Alexis Tucker, our start- ing center (out with a bro- ken arm the past four games until mid-January), which means we have not had our entire line-up available once this season—yet, we are 7-3, and our young players are get- ting game experience, which means late in the season we are going to have players who can step in when needed, with- out us losing a step." The Lady Titans took a 13- 4 lead at the end of the first eight minutes of play, and at intermission, Gibson South- ern led 29 -7. The eventual winners con- tinued their strangle hold on the defensive end of the play- ing floor, allowing the Lady Chargers just three points in the third quarter to take a commanding 43-10 advantage after 24 minutes of basketball. In the final quarter, the La- dy Titans outscored the hosts 10 -6 to account for the final 53- 16 score. Spink led Gibson South- ern in scoring with 15 points on five of nine shooting from the floor. Spink knocked down three of five shots from two- point range and two of four tries from behind the three- point line. At the free throw line, she connected on three of four attempts for her 15 points. Twelve of her 15 points came in the first half of the contest. Sophomore Nola Ravellette added 11 points to the Lady Ti- tan side of the scoring ledger, the third straight outing the second-year varsity perform- er has put home double-digit scoring. Ravellette hit on four of six shot attempts from in- side the three-point line, and from beyond the three-point arc, she hit on one of two tries for her 11 points. All of Ravel- lette's scoring came in the first three periods of play. Chloey Graham, a 5'7" ju- nior, tossed in four of nine shots and added two of two from the charity stripe for 10 points to close out the dou- ble figure scoring for Gib- son Southern. Graham also grabbed four rebounds, came up with four steals, and hand- ed out four assists in her 18 minutes of play. Sophomore Lauryn Adam- son had six points for the Lady Titans, followed by sophomore Lydia Maurer with five count- ers, and both 5'9" senior Ava Weisheit and 5'6" freshman Molly Spindler scored three points each to close out the Gibson Southern scoring. Starting point guard Al- ly Malone, a 5'4" junior, did not score, but she did not take a shot in the game, and Weisheit, a usual near double figure scorer, took just two shots in the fray. Adamson led the Lady Ti- tans in rebounding with six caroms, and in addition to her six points on three of three shooting, and six rebounds in the battle, she had a pair of steals. Malone handed out three assists, grabbed a pair of re- bounds, and came up with a steal in her limited time on the floor on Thursday. Kahle Young and Shelby Meadows led the Pike Cen- tral scoring attack with four points each, while Liberty Tay- lor hauled in six rebounds for the Lady Chargers. For the game, the Lady Ti- tans connected on 21 of 37 field goal attempts (56.8 per- cent), including four of 10 from behind the three-point line (40.0 percent). At the free throw line, the Lady Titans put home six of eight tries (75.0 percent). Pike Central managed to make just seven of 22 shots from the floor (31.4 percent). The Lady Chargers did not attempt a three-point shot. At the free throw line, the hosts managed to put home just two of 10 tries from the unguard- ed stripe. Gibson Southern turned the basketball over 11 times in the 32-minute encounter, while Pike Central coughed up the basketball 21 times. The win put Gibson South- ern at 7-3 overall and 4-1 in PAC play on the season, while the loss left Pike Central at 2- 10 on the 2022-23 hardwood campaign. The Lady Titans will re- turn to action in the Toyota Teamwork Classic on Thurs- day at 10:30 a.m. when Gibson Southern will tangle with Sil- ver Creek at Titan Fieldhouse in a rematch of last year's In- diana High School Athletic As- sociation (IHSA A) Charles- town Regional Championship Game, won by Silver Creek, when the Lady Titans were without Ava Weisheit, who sustained an ACL injury in the IHSA A Sectional Game against Evansville Memorial. Gibson Southern will also play at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening in Titan Fieldhouse against an opponent to be de- termined by winners and los- ers in other games played on Thursday. Lauryn Adamson (14), a 5'7" sophomore for Gibson Southern, scores two of her six points in the Lady Ti- tans' 53-16 Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) win in Petersburg. Ravellette leads Lady Titans past South Spencer By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Sophomore Nola Ravel- lette rammed home a ca- reer-high 19 points to lead the Gibson Southern High School Girls to a 59 -40 Pock- et Athletic Conference (PAC) victory in Reo last Tuesday evening. The second-year varsity performer did it in style, can- ning seven of nine field goal attempts, including three of three from behind the three- point arc and four of six from two-point range, along with two free throws for her 19 points. Ravellette had plenty of help in her effort, as 5'7" ju- nior Chloey Graham pumped in 16 points, and 5'9" sopho- more Gabby Spink tossed in 12 counters in her first con- test of the 2022-23 hardwood campaign, after missing the first eight outings of the year due to a stress fracture. Ava Weisheit, a 5'9" senior, added another nine mark- ers for the Lady Titans, and sophomore Lydia Maurer had a three-point basket to close out the scoring for the winners. "We played really well to- night," said GSHS Coach Kyle Brasher after the game, "Obviously, we were con- cerned how Gabby would play, after sitting out so long, but she did a great job on both ends of the floor. "Nola was absolutely unbe- lievable in her play this eve- ning. She shot the ball lights out from all over the floor, and her defense was very good. "She had three rebounds and two steals in a just total- ly complete game. The Lady Titans led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, and at the half intermission, the eventual winners held a 21-14 advantage. A fter three periods of bas- ketball, Gibson Southern held an insurmountable 42- 28 margin, and over the fi- nal eight minute session, the Lady Titans outscored the hosts 17-12 to account for the final 59 -40 score. The Lady Titans commit- ted just eight turnovers in the game, while the Gibson Southern defense forced the Lady Rebels to cough the basketball up 23 times. South Spencer did outre- bound Gibson Southern 25 - 22, but only one of those re- bounds came on the offen- sive end of the playing floor. Weisheit led the Lady Ti- tans in rebounding with six caroms, and Graham grabbed another five errant shots for Gibson Southern. Senior Trinity Britton was the leading scorer (12 points) and rebounder (six rebounds) for South Spencer. Gibson Southern put home 21 of 54 field goal attempts (39 percent), while South Spencer connected on 10 of 31 shots from the floor (32 percent). "We played really well this evening on both ends of the floor," said Brasher in a post- game interview. "We took great care of the basketball, and on defense, we took away almost everything they tried. "We did not shoot the ball overall as well as we have in past games, but we picked up in every other area of our game. We just looked really good tonight." The win gave Gibson Southern a 6 -3 overall re- cord, including 3-1 in PAC play. Gibson Southern will play Silver Creek in the opening round of the Toyota Team- work Classic in Titan Field- house at 10:30 a.m. on Thurs- day. They return to the Titan Fieldhouse court Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. to take on an opponent to be deter- mined by play throughout the day in the Toyota Team- work Classic. The Lady Titans will also play on Friday in the third round of the Toyota Team- work Classic at a site to also be determined. Boys fall just short in fourth quarter to Wildcats By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Leading 45 -40 going in- to the fourth quarter in Mt. Vernon Saturday night, Gib- son Southern scored just four points in the final eight min- utes to fall to the host Wild- cats 55 -49 in a Pocket Athlet- ic Conference (PAC) boys' basketball contest to fall to 0 -5 on the 2022-23 season, including 0 -2 in conference play. The Titans led 18 -14 at the end of the first eight minutes, and at the half, Gibson South- ern took a 28 -24 advantage to the locker room. The Titans added a point to that lead in the third peri- od to take the 45 -40 lead in- to the fourth stanza, but the Wildcats put home 15 points, while holding Gibson South- ern to just a pair of two-point field goals over the final eight minutes to take the come- from-behind 55 -49 PAC win. Nicot Burnett led the Wildcat scoring attack with 16 points, but he had plen- ty of help, as Jackson Clow- ers and Jack Campbell both added another 10 counters in the contest, while Brady Schickel scored nine mark- ers and Nash Hostetter put home eight tallies to provide the winners with a balanced scoring attack. Logan Dut- kiewicz chipped in with a two-point basket to close out the scoring for the winners and account for the 55 points scored by Mt. Vernon. Ethan Spindler, a 6'2" se- nior, was the top scorer for Gibson Southern with 15 points. Spindler was the only Ti- tan to notch double-digits in the game for Gibson South- ern, but 6' senior Cole McK- ee and 6' classmate Jaxun Lamb both added nine points to the Titan side of the scor- ing ledger. Isaac O'Neal, a 6'4" senior, had six counters in the con- test for Gibson Southern, while 6'1" junior Lucas Kis- sel chipped in with five tal- lies for the Titans. Garett Reid, a 6' senior, and 6'5" junior Maxx Wil- son each had a basket for two points, and 6'1" sopho- more Brodey Lamb connect- ed on one of two free throws for one-point to close out the scoring for the Titans. Gibson Southern went to the free throw line nine times and made five of those nine opportunities (55.6 percent), while the Wildcats made 16 trips to the charity stripe, and they made 10 of those attempts (62.5 percent), giv- ing the eventual winners a one-point advantage at the unguarded stripe. The Titans put home 20 field goals, two more than the Wildcats, who tossed in 18 field goals. However, of Mt. Vernon's 18 field goals, nine of them were of the three-point variety, while of Gibson Southern's 20 field goals, just four were from behind the three-point arc to give Mt. Vernon a five-point advantage on long distance shooting to account for the six-point margin of victory for the Wildcats. Gibson Southern will take on Scottsburg in the opening round of the Toyota Team- work Classic at noon in Ti- tan Fieldhouse on Thurs- day Dec. 22. The Titans will play again Thursday evening in Titan Fieldhouse against a team to be determined by the outcome of games played throughout the day. On Friday, the Titans will again take to the court, but the time will be determined by the outcomes of the games played on Thursday. The game on Friday will be played at Princeton Commu- nity High School. Get your news anytime and anywhere! O N L I N E • S M A RT P H O N E • TA B L E T 812-753-3553 • 203 S.
