In an at- tempt to make our state more vet-friendly, and attract them back home after service, the governor signed into law a state property tax exemption for retired Hoosier veterans. And, if you remember, the only disappointing aspect of that state law was the four- year phase-in process by which it would be implement- ed. It began in the first affect- ed tax year with a 25% exemp- tion and increased annually by an additional 25%. Well… here's the really good news. This current tax year (2022) is now the fourth year of this process, making it now fully implemented. If you are an Indiana veter- an, and drawing retirement pay as a result of your ser- vice, it is now fully exempt from Indiana state income tax. When you file your tax- es next spring (2023), you will pay no state tax on that income. I am satisfied that most all reputable paid tax prepara- tion services are fully aware of this law, but I do believe that it is important enough that it at least deserves ask- ing the question. I strongly recommend that you inquire. The bigger concern, how- ever, are those of us who are smart enough to prepare our own taxes (of which I am not one). If you were previous- ly unaware of this situation, you are now. Examine your return carefully and make sure that you receive this ex- emption. Again, it should be a safe assumption that this should be happening auto- matically, but it is important enough to pay attention. Please call me with your questions or if I may be of any service to you. An SAE requires FFA members to create and op- erate an agriculture related business, work at an agricul- ture-related business or con- duct an agricultural research experience. Upon comple- tion, FFA members must sub- mit a comprehensive report regarding their career devel- opment experience. This year 30 sponsors funded SAE Grants.
