By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports ports@sgstartimes.com Brady Allen, at least for the time being, is committed to Purdue foot- ball, while the turmoil of their head coach Jeff Brohm leaving and his re- placement being named plays out. "He is staying at Purdue, unless he gets told they are going to go a different direction of any kind," said Brady's father, Chris Allen, on Fri- day. Allen said Brady had not been able to talk with the new coach or new of- fensive coordinator, Graham Har- rell, named late Thursday night just hours before the Star-Times spoke with Allen on Friday. Chris said it was a stressful week when they heard the news of Brohm leaving for his alma mater, Louis- ville, and then hearing Purdue had hired Ryan Walters. Allen said he liked what he had heard so far about Walters, who leaves the University of Illinois, where he was defensive coordinator. When Brohm left Purdue, his brother, who is the offensive coordi- nator, also announced he was leav- ing with him. So the question on Chris and Brady's minds was who would be the offensive coordinator, and what type of offense would they run? Allen said on Monday he had 45 texts by 8 a.m. when Louisville's coach Scott Satterfield announced he was leaving Louisville to go to Cin- cinnati. It was widely known Brohm at some point wanted to return to Louisville. Allen said the next day when Brohm resigned from Purdue he got 110 texts. Allen said he was driving to Tex- as that day and spent the day on the phone. "I had all these people calling me saying, "Did you see what he said in his press conference?" of Purdue's new head coach. "I loved what he did with Devon," said Allen. Walters immediately put Boonville graduate Devon Mockobee on scholarship. Allen added, "He ( Walters) said, 'he is wanting to put the best coach- ing staff possible together.'" So it was just a wait-and-see deal for the Allens. Chris said the concern was if they would bring in an offensive coordi- nator who favors the option or a two- threat quarterback. That question was answered late Thursday night. But by Friday morning Allen had already researched the new offensive coordinator, Graham Harrell, and found his style is to the Allens' liking. He runs a pro-style offense that operates from the shotgun. "That is what Brady ran all four years at Gib- son Southern" said Allen. He also talked with Titan football coach Nick Hart about it. They con- curred, Harrell's offense was tai- lor-made for Brady. Allen said while Brady hadn't been able to talk with the new offensive co- ordinator or coach as of last Friday, the athletic director had pulled him aside and talked to him. He told Al- len not to worry about the offensive style. "You are going to love it. We ar- en't getting away from the things we do here at Purdue." Allen said that was a big relief. Al- so finding out about the new offen- sive coordinator was a big relief. "I think his mind is a lot more at ease. Unless something totally comes out of the blue, he is commit- ted to staying there. Allen said another positive sign for Purdue and the new coaching staff is, "Since he came on board, not one kid has hit the portal. I'm sure that may change, but we are feeling a lot bet- ter about it." Allen said Purdue has announced senior Austin Burton will be the starting quarterback in the Citrus Bowl next week when Purdue plays L SU at 1 p.m. Jan. 2 in Orlando, Flor- ida. Allen said he is not disappointed Brady isn't starting. "They are miss- ing so many pieces to the offense," Allen still committed to Purdue
