Sports Tuesday, December 20, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times B-3 ALLEN Continued from page 1 said Allen. Purdue's sixth year senior quarterback, Aiden O'Con- nell, plus the leading receiver and starting tight end along with others have said they are not going to play in the Cit- rus Bowl. "I think it would be real- ly tough to throw Brady into something like that against L SU. When he goes out there you want him to be as prepared as possible. I don't think they want to throw him to the wolves. You don't want him to start his career like that," said Allen. Allen said Brady may play some of the game, but won't be starting and isn't expected to play lots of minutes. Allen said he likes the way Purdue has been bringing Brady along. "He has been taking most of the scout team snaps, getting used to playing against Purdue's number one defense. So all year he got to go against Purdue's number ones. That has been great ex- perience and learning pro- cess for him." Allen said one of the rea- sons you don't see freshmen playing quarterback at Pur- due is their huge and sophis- ticated playbook. "That thing is about 5.5 inches thick," said Allen. "It has been a crazy week and our heads are spinning," said Allen. But he added, "He (Brady) is staying at Purdue, unless he gets told they are going to go a different direc- tion." Titans fall to Rebels in 49-37 loss By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com "Our best players are not the best players on the floor," said a dejected Gibson South- ern High School Boys' Basket- ball Coach Mark Rohrer, after his team's disappointing 49 -37 Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to South Spencer in Reo Friday evening, "and I just told the team that in the locker room. "We are not attacking the basket, and we spend too much time just dribbling the basketball going east and west, not north or south. "Obviously, we have to make some adjustments, and that is my responsibility. "If you would have told me we would be 0 -4 at this point in the season and averaging in the 30s on offense, I absolutely would not have believed you. If this is how we are going to play, I don't know who we are going to beat. "We will be making chang- es, and we will get this cor- rected." The Titans trailed 14-9 at the end of the first quarter of play against the Rebels on Friday, and at the half inter- mission, South Spencer took a 22-13 lead into the dressing room, after holding the Ti- tans to just four points in the eight-minute second period. A fter 24 minutes of PAC basketball play, South Spen- cer held a 36 -28 advantage over visiting Gibson South- ern, as the Titans outscored the Rebels 15 -14 in the third stanza, scoring more points in the third quarter than they did in the entire first half. With 3:31 left in the con- test, Gibson Southern's Ethan Spindler, a 6'2" senior, scored to put the Titans within four at 41-37, but the Rebels out- scored the visitors 8 -2 over the final three minutes to win going away by the final 49 -37 margin. The Titans put home 15 of 29 field goal tries (51.7 per- cent) for the game, connect- ing on four of eight attempts in the opening period, one of four in the second eight-minutes of play, six of 10 in the third quar- ter, and four of seven in the fi- nal eight minutes of the game. Gibson Southern commit- ted just 12 turnovers in the fray, and two of those came in the final minute of play. South Spencer took 33 shots at the basket in the game, and the Rebels made 18 of those tries (54.5 percent). The Rebels coughed up the basketball just six times in the hard-fought battle. They committed two turnovers in the first quarter, none in the second stanza, one in the third period, and three in the final eight minutes of the encoun- ter. From the free throw line, the Titans tossed in a cool four of nine attempts from the un- guarded stripe (44.4 percent), while the Rebels made seven of 10 tries (70.0 percent) from the free throw line. Lucas Kissel, a 6'1" junior, led the Gibson Southern scor- ing attack with 13 points. He was the only Titan to score in double-digits. Spindler had nine counters in the contest, while 6'4" senior Isaac O'Neal and 6' senior Cole McKee both had four points in the losing ef- fort for the Titans. Jaxun Lamb, a 6' senior, put in three points for Gib- son Southern, and 6'5" junior Maxx Wilson and 6'1" sopho- more Brodey Lamb both net- ted a basket for two points each to close out the scoring for Gibson Southern and ac- count for the 37 points scored by the Titans. The loss dropped Gibson Southern to 0 -4 on the early 2022-23 hardwood campaign, including 0 -1 in the PAC. The Titans played at Mt. Vernon on Saturday in anoth- er conference contest, and on Thursday, Gibson South- ern will take on Scottsburg at noon in the opening round of the Toyota Teamwork Classic in Titan Fieldhouse. The Titans will play again on Thursday, and the time and opponent will depend on outcomes of other games throughout the day. Gibson Southern will also play on Friday, with the time and opponent again depend- ing on the outcomes of other games played. "We won three out of four quarters, that was the differ- ence tonight. The third quar- ter we were outscored 16 -2. The guys played very hard and I never have to coach their effort. I hope we con- tinue to grow and learn from this experience," said Twig Coach Kyle Debord. The Twigs seemed to have the game in hand, leading 21- 11 at halftime. Knoxx Lamb scored nine of his team high 13 points in the first half and Ian Maikranz had seven. Washington stormed back with a 16 -2 run in the third quarter.
