MAGIC Continued from page 1 PREVIEW Continued from page 1 2022-23 season with Castle High School on Nov. 8, then after taking on PAC opponent North Posey on Nov. 11, GSHS will travel to Indianapolis on Nov. 12 (no rest after North Posey) to tangle with Bishop Chatard. The Lady Titans' next chal- lenge will come on Nov. 15, when they travel to Forest Park to take on the defend- ing Class 2A State Champion Forest Park in a conference contest. On Nov. 29, Gibson South- ern will play Vincennes Lincoln, and three days later, on Dec. 2, the Lady Titans will travel to Bedford to take on Bedford-North Lawrence. On Dec. 6, it will be Evans- ville Memorial coming to the Titan Fieldhouse. A fter a couple of conference contests, it will be the annual Toyota Classic, and the Lady Titans have Silver Creek, Sullivan, and Edgewood in their side of the bracket. Really? The other side of the bracket will be Princeton, Wood Memorial, Barr-Reeve, and Mt. Carmel. A fter the Toyota Classic, Gibson Southern will again travel to Indianapolis to tackle Avon High School and Hender- son County (Kentucky). That will bring the Lady Titans back the seven remain- ing conference outings, before closing out the regular season with Evansville North. There can not be a tougher non-conference schedule in Indiana, and the Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) is a gauntlet in itself… Still, the Lady Titans will not be hunting for victories with a switch, as they have some pretty potent bullets in their gun. Chloey Graham, a 5'9" junior, led Gibson Southern in scoring (16.9), free throw percentage (81.4 percent), three-point field percentage (39.3 percent) and was second in overall field goal percent- age (47.2 percent), and third in rebounding, pulling in 3.6 caroms a night from her guard spot as a sophomore in 2021- 22. She led the team in steals with 2.3 thefts a game. Sophomore Gabby Spink, a 5'9" point guard, put home 13.9 points a contest last year as a freshman. She led the team in assists with 4.5 a game, while connecting on 74.2 percent of her free throw attempts and coming up 2.1 steals a fray. She was second on the squad in three-point field goal shoot- ing (36.4 percent). Senior Alexis Tucker, a 5'10" center, tossed in 11.1 points per outing a year ago as a junior. She also pulled in 5.6 missed shot attempts in 2021- 22 to finish second on the team in rebounding. Tucker led the team in field goal percentage, canning 57.4 percent of her shot attempts. Ava Weisheit, a 5'9" senior, led the Lady Titans in rebounding in 2021-22, grab- bing 7.0 rebounds a game as a junior. Weisheit was fourth on the team in scoring, pumping in 8.6 markers a battle. Sophomore Ally Malone, a 5'4" guard, was the first player "off the bench" for the Lady Titans as a freshman in 2021- 22, but she will be expected to be on the floor from the "open- ing tip" in 2022-23. Malone was "instant excitement" when she entered the game last season, whether it was scoring a quick hoop, getting a steal, or grab- bing a rebound, she "made something happen" immedi- ately, and without question, she will be a "factor" from the beginning this season. Sophomore Nola Ravel- lette, a 5'8" wing, saw qual- ity minutes as a freshman last season, and she will be counted on to "move up" in the rotation for even more qual- ity minutes this time around. She has the ability to score, rebound, and defend, and she has the potential to play a huge role in the success of the 2022-23 edition of Lady Titan Basketball. Juniors Makenna Turner, a 5'10" post player, and Jenna Loyd, a 5'8" wing, are both being counted on for import- ant minutes this season, and both could be called on early and often in the upcoming season. There are 24 Lady Titans in the program for 2022-23, with two seniors, four juniors, six sophomores, and 12 freshmen vying for spots on the varsity, junior varsity, and freshman teams. "I admit that I don't believe any 3A school has a tougher schedule than we do," said in post practice interview last Thursday, "but I think the schedule we have put together will make us better at the end of the season to prepare us for post-season tournament play. "I do believe that our biggest challenge through Christmas will be our overall inexperi- ence at the varsity level. "Although we do have four starters back, and Ally (Malone) was first off the bench, only sophomore Nola Ravellette has any real varsity playing time. "I believe we have quality players who will be up from a very good junior varsity, but we basically played an eight- girl rotation last year, with our three seniors, the four return- ing starters, and Ally, with Nola getting some minutes the second semester. "That leaves us with just six players with any real varsity experience, which could leave us very thin if we lose anyone to injuries or illness; however, we think with experience, we will have excellent depth after Christmas. "We feel really good about our program overall. "Graham has continued to get even better—She has worked very hard in the off-season to improve every facet of her game, from shoot- ing, to rebounding, to defense, to ballhandling, she has just gotten better. "Spink has also gotten better in all aspects of her game, and her experience last year as a freshman has matured her well beyond the usual sophomore. "Malone is another one who has improved her entire game over the off-season—She is really going to add another dimension to our team on both the offensive end and the defensive end of the floor. She is going to be fun to watch with her all-out relentless efforts on both ends of the floor. "Weisheit is coming off the ACL injury that she sustained in the sectional final that kept her out of the regional; but she has worked hard to rehab her knee, and we think she will be ready. "The doctor has cleared her to play, and she has looked very good in our first two weeks of practice. Brasher sees Forest Park, North Posey, South Spen- cer, and Washington, along with his Lady Titans as the favorites in the PAC, but he cautioned that any team in the conference could win a game on any given night; conse- quently, he sees every game as a challenge each time GSHS takes the court. "Obviously, we have our work cut out for us, but we are very excited about the upcoming season—We have some very good players back and some very good players up from last year's JV", said Brasher, "We believe we will be very competitive this year each time we take the floor. "We are looking forward to opening the season with Castle next week." Brasher, in his fifth year as the head coach for the Lady Titans, has posted an amaz- ing 77-22 record in his first four seasons on the side- lines as the Gibson Southern Mentor. He will be assisted by Ron Kahle, Anna Hackert, and Kelsie Linneweder. a couple of mistakes and give them a short field to make it 14-14. Honestly in the locker room it felt like we had lost the game already," said Hart Gibson Southern started the second half looking like their old selves. A fter two first downs they shut down the Patriot offense forcing a punt. The punt only went two yards and Gibson South- ern took over at the Patriot 39 -yard line. Gibson Southern took advantage. Boyd hit Cole McKee on the Titans first offensive play of the half for a 39 -yard touchdown and a 21-14 lead. The Titan defense followed that up by forcing a fumble on the first play of the series and T. J. Lewis recovered it for the Titans at their own 41-yard line. A short Roberts run followed by an eight-yard pass to Herren picked up a first down. Then passes by Boyd to McKee for nine and DeLong for 14 and O'Neal for 8 put the Titans at the Owen Valley 16 -yard line with a second and two. A Roberts run came up a yard short on second down. Then on third down the Titans were called for false start. Boyd hit O'Neal for 12-yard and a first and goal at the eight. But they wouldn't get any closer. An incomplete pass followed by a two-yard loss and a sack pushed the Titans back to the 20 -yard line. Gibson Southern brought in Cam Novotny, but his 32-yard attempt was blocked. "We had a couple of chances to stretch it out. We came out the locker room, got a three and out, then scored on the next play. We caused a fumble and were moving the ball down to first and goal, but false started on third-and-one and we get a field goal blocked. We had a chance to make a it a two score game and maybe make them go to the air a little more, but we didn't," said Hart. Owen Valley pounded the ball on a series of runs by McDonald and quarterback Brody Lester as they covered 76 yards in 13 plays, all on the ground, capped off by a Lester four-yard touchdown with 0 :24 left in the third quarter to tie the game at 21-21. Gibson Southern on their next series had negative one yard. For the second consecu- tive possession, Owen Valley ran the ball nine times with McDonald and Lester to go 59 yards and take a 28 -21 lead with 11:31 left in the game. Gibson Southern was unable to answer. They were forced to punt facing fourth and seven at their own 24-yard line with 5:42 to go in the game. Gibson Southern was able to force a punt by the Patriots but they picked up one first down and burned 3:57 off the clock leaving the Titans just 1:49 to cover 74 yards. A second down pass to McKee for 20 yards followed by a nine yard pass to Herren gave the Titans hope. But again Owen Valley's pressure created three consecutive sacks that left Gibson South- ern facing fourth and 29 with 42 seconds left. When Boyd's fourth down pass hit the turf with :37 seconds left the Titans' magical season was over. "I thought our defense played really well," said Hart. Owen Valley averaged 53 points a game. "They scored seven on a pick six. We had two pretty short fields. They put one really nice drive together to make it 21-21, but I felt like our defense was in tough spots the entire night and played pretty well." Hart said it was just mistakes by the Titans that cost the them the game. "That was kind of our 'MO' most of the year. We weren't able to overcome it. That starts with me. It is my job to fix that. For whatever reason we weren't able to press the right button. When you make mistakes like we did through the year it is eventually going to cost you a game. We obviously didn't get it fixed," said Hart. Titan Zach Butler is fired up at the Titans run onto the field prior to their game in with Owen Valley on Friday night in the second round of the sectional. Titan quarterback Tanner Boyd throws a pass during the Titans game with Owen Valley. He completed 25 of 36 passes for 251 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT. Titans Brody Klem (54), Sean DeLong (2) and Michael Herren (6) celebrate fol- lowing an early score.
