By George Pickersgill Gibson County Veterans Service Officer 812 385 -4522 I want to begin this month by asking you one of the most important questions I possi- bly could. Do you, and your spouse/family, know exactly where your military discharge is at this very moment? At the risk of being redundant and putting anyone off, I'm going to continue to bang this drum until I'm literally no longer able. It is just that important. I can talk to you month after month about veteran's benefits but every single one of them involves eligibility criteria. Generally, the first and fore- most of any of these criteria is the character of your service and the only way to vali- date that is by your military discharge (DD Form 214). Often times, as with death and burial benefits, that vali- dation is extremely time sensi- tive. In other words, we often only have a very short amount of time to verify qualifying service. When we are unable to do so quickly, the benefits you so rightly deserve may be in jeopardy. Please trust me when I tell you that there is noth- ing more heart breaking than to have to deny a family the benefits you have coming upon your passing simply because we cannot verify your service. Please take the time right now to find it and make sure that your family knows exactly where it is. If you recorded it at our courthouse, or any other county courthouse, that may be a good place to begin. If you absolutely cannot find it, please contact me and let me help you order a replacement from the National Archives in St. Louis. Once you do have it, consider filing a copy of it here in the Service Office for safe- keeping. You can never understand what a joy it is for me to serve you but, at least in this case, you must help me help you. veteran's voice Where is your discharge? Frihul F This year's Sinister Cellar, located in Fort Branch Community Park, attracted more than 1,000 guests to the haunt, which continues to grow every year. The Fort Branch town Halloween festival moved their start time to the afternoon to try to flow people from one big town event to the other. Above: Among 5-8 year olds, costume contest winners included Princess Adelei Wright, Rylin Stodghill, Cruella DeVille played by Layla Lee and Henry Carter as the Grim Reaper. Right: Pillsbury dough babies Bennett Denu and Brock Bare caught a ride at the Fort Branch Town Fest Saturday.
