Church Tuesday, October 5, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times A-9 stances of this present fallen world, eventually, eventually, things will come right. As David recognized, the mighty will fall. As Hannah and Mary pro- claimed, the mighty will be put down and the lowly ex- alted. As Jesus pointed the mor- al of his parable, "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who hum- bles himself will be exalted." REFLECTIONS Continued from page 8 was a country church. It was where many local families worshiped and gave meaning to the definition of communi- ty. It was where they found strength to endure by serv- ing and loving one another in good times and in bad. My sisters were married there. It was there my brother's name was brought before God as he served in Vietnam. It was there that a final good-bye was said to my mother who lost a long and courageous battle with cancer. It was there that the seeds of God were planted in our lives. And then he told me the news. Attendance had fallen to such a low number that keeping the church open was no longer possible. Keith continued to visit the elderly who were shut-in. One lady in particular asked how his parents were. Lucy, his mom, died many years ago. Monroe, his dad, died in 1963. But he replied, "Fine, just fine." He did not want to hurt or confuse her. He was there for a purpose—to relieve her loneliness and to let her know that someone cares. The church as we knew it is now gone. But Keith did not walk away empty-hand- ed. He asked for a hymnal as he signed the papers releas- ing the building to the new group taking its possession. As he reads it, the memory of music from within the old church will be his forever. But most importantly, he takes with him and lives a les- son learned. To serve Jesus, one must serve others. To serve others, one must often serve outside the walls of the church house. INSIGHT Continued from page 8 who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you," Heb 13:17. I have had my share of telling God about his way- ward children who refuse to submit to God's word. I have been on the receiving end of their slander, gossip, and godless conduct. When I finally left, as I drove out of town, I shook the dust off my shoes. Jesus' knows the spiritual condition of his churches. His seven letters to the sev- en churches show us what a wonderful or evil church looks like. Jesus commended the churches at Smyrna and Phil- adelphia. They were doing ev- erything right. He commend- ed the churches at Ephesus, Pergamos, and Thyatira, but they had some serious issues they needed to deal urgently with or else. Sardis was a dead church and didn't know it. The La- odiceans were a social club. His warning to the way- ward churches was to straighten up or he would re- move their candlestick. They would cease to be a light for him. Ichabod would be their name. Jesus addressed these sev- en letters to the messenger of the church—the pastor. The pastor is the angel, the mes- senger, the one sent by God to lead the church. What is a pastor to do when some church leaders know more than God? What can be done with a church that thinks it can vote a pastor in or out like one does a politi- cian? Without the support of their congregation, there is little a pastor can accomplish. Which church do you be- long to?
