VERNON, 35-7 TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Devan Roberts scored four touch- downs for the second week in a row as Gibson Southern ran up a 35 -0 lead on their way to a 35 -7 win over Mt. Vernon. The Titans are 7-0 so far this season. As good as the Titans' offense was against Mt. Vernon, and it was good, (Roberts had four touch- downs and 121 yards on 11 carries, while Tanner Boyd completed 16 of 22 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown) the Titan defense was better. They held Mt. Vernon, who was 4-2 coming into the game, to just 117 yards of total offense. Sixty of those came late in the third and ear- ly fourth quarters against the Titan reserves. Mt. Vernon's first three posses- sions totaled minus seven yards as they had zero, minus five and minus two. The third defensive stand was especially poignant because Gibson Southern was leading by just one score and had fumbled it at their own 33-yard line. Instead of giving up a score, they stuffed the Wildcats for no gain on first down, incomplete pass on sec- ond down and the stopped a pass after a three yard gain. Mt. Vernon decided to go for it at the Titan 26 - yard line on fourth and three. Bur- nett was sacked by Beau Rose for a nine-yard loss. "The whole defense did a phe- nomenal job all night,' said Titan Coach Nick Hart. "The whole D-line. They owned the line of scrimmage on that side of the football. It seemed like they (Mt. Vernon) were always behind the chains because we were doing a great job up front," said Hart. Gibson Southern scored on their first offensive possession, taking over at their own 43-yard line after a Wildcat punt. A 25 -yard pass from Boyd to Cole McKee gave them a first down at the Mt. Vernon 27 yard line. A couple of short runs led to a 22-yard pass from Boyd to Sean De- Long give the Titans first and goal at the two. Roberts took it in on the next play and Cam Novotny split the uprights to make it 7-0 with 7:44 left in the first quarter. It looked like the Titans would score easily and often. But it was the last time they would score in the first quarter. Their next two possessions end- ed in a fumble, and a dropped pass on third down forced a punt. Gibson Southern got the ball back at the 10 :40 mark of the sec- ond quarter. They would score again, taking only six plays to cover 66 yards. It was highlighted by a 25 - Titan boys win cross country PAC Spindler set course record By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern won the boys Pocket Athletic Conference meet on Saturday as Alex Spindler won the boys' race and set a new course record time of 16:07. "I just stayed back and stayed loose for the first mile and settled in. I knew the other runners were going to be tough competition so I just tried to stay with them. At the end I tried to get a good lead so after the last turn I wouldn't Lady Titan soccer picks up wins 14, 15 By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern secured the Pocket Athletic Confer- ence Championship with a win over South Spencer on Monday night and then fol- lowed it up with a win over South Spencer on Tuesday to finish the regular season at 15 -2. The win over South Spen- cer left them undefeated and 11-0 in the PAC. They beat South Spencer 6 -0 on Monday night as five players scored. Ella Jones had two goals to lead the Titans. Riley Bryant, Brylie Kern, Leah Kramer and Nola Ravellette each added one goal. Claire Higginbotham, Ka- leigh Baehl, Brylie Kern, Halle Pohl, Ravellette and Jenna Loyd all had one assist. Gibson Southern led 2-0 at halftime, but then tacked on four more points in the sec- ond half. On Tuesday night the Lady Titans stampeded South Knox 9 -0, scoring four goals in the first half and five more in the second half. Gibson Southern is set to open the sectional against Boonville at 7 p.m. in the Ev. Reitz sectional. Gibson Southern beat Boonville 7-1 on August 18. Boonville is 2-9 on the season and 1-7 in the PAC. "Being undefeated in the conference and also unde- feated at home has boosted the team's confidence. We are going into sectionals with a goal to make it to the cham- pionship game on Saturday. The team is looking forward to Tuesday with our focus on improving defensively as Devan Roberts races down field for his fourth touchdown on the night. Roberts carried the ball 11 times for 121 yards and four touchdowns against Mt. Vernon. Lady Titans golf place 17th in state finals The Lady Titan golf team finished 17th in the state fi- nals on Saturday at Prairie View golf course in Carmel. It was the second time Gib- son Southern had qualified for the state finals. "The State Finals topped off the year. The girls worked hard all season and it real- ly paid off. It will definitely be memorable for the se- niors moving forward, and motivation for the younger players returning," said first year head coach Kristen Harpenau. The state finals were con- tested on Friday and Satur- day playing the Robert Trent Jones-designed Prairie View course at 5,900 yards. The venue presented several challenges for Gib- son Southern and different course conditions than they are used to playing. "I do not think it was the distance that challenged our team. The biggest struggle we faced at Prairie View was the bent grass fairways. The tight lies this very short grass gives you is much different than what they have played on all year. The ball sits up on zoysia and Bermuda grasses much more than it does on bent grasses. It definitely affected us on short delicate chips. Other challenges were the number of strategical- ly placed bunkers on this course, and the cold morning tee times. Average starting temperature was about 44 de- grees. Overall I believe they adapted and competed very well," said Harpenau. Senior Madylin Sperling was the highest placing Titan in 60th. She shot a steady 91 on both days of the competi- tion. Sophomore Haley Hughes placed 82nd shooting a 96 on Friday and a 102 on Saturday. Senior Vanessa Schmitt, after struggling on Friday with a 109, rebounded to shoot 94 on Saturday. Senior Adryauna Redden shot 107, 112 to place 95th, while junior Katelyn Walk- er shot 115 and 120 to place Alex Spindler gets a big hug from his mom seconds after crossing the finish line. Spindler won the PAC and set a new course record with a time of 16:07.
