South Gibson Star-Times A-4 Tuesday, October 5, 2022 LOCAL By Janice Barniak Star-Times Editor editor@sgstartimes.com A fter a COVID hiatus, United Way Day of Caring came back and expanded to fill an entire week to celebrate the return of an event that hasn't happened since 2019. Volunteers from area busi- nesses showed up at YMCA Camp Carson, the Isaiah 1:17 Project, Arc of Southwest Indi- ana, Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army and the Center for Seniors of Gibson County to take on projects the non-profits, with their limited staff, have less ability to do. United Way Director Jamie Schaefer said the expanded format is helpful in many ways. "We decided to make it a week long, and I will say I do think this is where we'll go with it in the future," she said. "It's more work on our end, but it allows flexibility for the businesses." Day of Caring has many volunteers from banks, for example, but having all the employees who want to volun- teer come on one day would create staffing issues. By expanding to a week, employ- ees who want to participate can rotate in on different days. She added that the weather cooperated all week, but another advantage of having a whole week was that if it had rained the volunteers could have pushed back the outdoor work to a different day. Deaconess, Ivy Tech, and so many other organizations volunteered. "It's so nice to be back out in the community. We got so much work done. They were finishing up one proj- ect and moving to another because our volunteers were so gung-ho. Everywhere we went people said, 'We've been wanting to do this for so long but just don't have the time or the staff.' It's been over- whelming what we've gotten done each day." United Way is still sign- ing up children under five for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and they'll be fund- raising through the end of the year. For more information, reach out to the organization on their Facebook page. After 3 years, Day of Caring returns, expands ARC of Southwest- ern Indiana volunteers cleaned up at the Boys and Girls Club last week after the United Way brought back Day of Caring and extended it to a week.
