The PAT failed and Gibson Southern led 13-0 with 8:51 left in the half. Gibson Southern got the ball back when Ty Whitledge, Brody Klem and Brock Fau- quher ganged up to drop Bar- nett for a four-yard loss that led to a three-and-out. Gibson Southern took over at their own 36. They would plod their way down field with DeLong going for three yards, Boyd hitting DeLong for six yards then Roberts getting five for a first down at the 45. Gibson Southern was called for false start on third down making it third and 13. Boyd hit Isaac O'Neal for sev- en yards and on fourth down Mt. Vernon was called for defensive holding, giving the Titans a first down at the Mt. Vernon 36 -yard line. Boyd on first down hit O'Neal for a 25 -yard gain to the 11. DeLong ran it to the one, before Roberts took it in from the one for a 20 -0 lead with 3:16 left in the half. Neither team would score in the last three minutes. Gibson Southern received the kick to open the second half. They marched down field 65 yards in 13 plays, high- lighted by a 12-yard pass to McKee, a 12-yard pass to O'Neal and a 17-yard run by Roberts that took it to the three for a first down. Boyd on second down found Brock Fauqhuer in the right corner of the end zone for the score. Then on the two-point conversion Boyd found a sliding DeLong in the end zone to make it 28 -0. A three-and-out by the Wildcats gave Gibson South- ern the ball on at their 46. A fter an incomplete pass, Roberts broke off his longest run of the night for a 54-yard touchdown, making it 35 -0 af- ter Novotny hit the PAT with 6:30 let in the third quarter. "Devan was great. He ran the ball really well. Our O-line did a great job opening up some holes for him. We threw the ball well, but it just seemed like it wasn't as clean as it should have been," said Coach Hart. It also started the clock running for the mercy rule. Mt. Vernon scored a touch- down against the Titans' reserve defense for the final score of 35 -7. Hart said the it was a good win against a good team, but Hart expressed concern about mistakes by the of- fense. "I don't mean to take away from Mt. Vernon, because they have a good defense, but it was just some unforced stuff: penalties, drops, turn- overs, missed assignments and miscommunications," said Hart. "You have to get rid of the unforced stuff because when you get into the playoffs against better defenses you can't stop yourself, because they are going to stop you. We have a couple of weeks here to get it rolling, but these last couple of weeks ha- ven't clicked the way we need to offensively," said Hart. Gibson Southern will host Princeton this Friday at 7 p.m. Princeton has struggled this season going 0 -7 so far. They lost 53-0 to Boonville on Friday. Their closest two games were their 26 -8 season opening loss to Forest Park and 40 -28 loss to 1A North Central (Farmersburg) on Sept. 9. We are missing two varsity start- ers, senior Riley Bryant and junior Halle Pohl. Both are out with ACL injuries. We also have two other var- sity players, Jenna Loyd, and Nola Ravellette out. All four girls were big contrib- utors to our offense. Given that, we have had other players step up in big ways to fill in the gaps. Sopho- more Halle Evans has been playing forward, and fresh- man Corinne Stevens has been a great utility player, filling in different posi- tions. We pulled up fresh- man Lainey Cloin who has already scored three varsi- ty goals. The girls are play- ing well as a unit and we are excited for next week.
