By Janice Barniak Star-Times Editor editor@sgstartimes.com Saturday the family of Kimber Hibbs raised $1,215 to send local children for free swim lessons — enough to cover approximately 27 chil- dren's tuitions. Organizer Brady Bota said Kimber was her cousin's daughter and after Kimber died tragically Aug. 3, 2021, the family appreciated local business owners coming together to offer 16 children free swimming lessons at the Princeton public pool. That inspired their own fundraiser in Kimber's memory, which included Bingo and a vendor fair in Lafayette Park Saturday. The large shelterhouse in Lafay- ette Park is in sight of the pool where Kimber passed away. The family has the goal of eventually sending 100 chil- dren to swim lessons, with what they hope will be annual events, and to potentially also offer arm floats for swimming at the pool. "It's a way to memorialize Kimber and keep her memory alive. This is something she would be proud of. It gives me chills. It's something good that we're down here, we're not being bitter over the situation. God took her and we're sorry for that, but we're not going to let it happen to another baby," Bota said. According to the Center for Disease Control approxi- mately 900 children a year die from drowning, making it the third leading cause of death among children.
