Vernon volleyball in five games By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern won a hard fought match over Mt. Vernon on Tuesday night as it took a full five games to come away with the win. The Titans got off to a slow start, losing the first set 25 -17. They fought back to win the second set 25 -21, before dropping the third set 25 -17 again. The Lady Titans then won the final set, 25 -19. It set them up for the 15 point fifth set and they won by the absolute minimum 15 -13 in the 15 win by two game. "It was a hard-fought bat- tle. (It was) our first game of the season that went five sets. The girls had great teamwork and determina- tion. Volleyball is such a momentum game, it was great to see them come from behind and pull it off," said Titan volleyball coach Emily Schmitt. JV football loses to HH Gibson Southern's junior varsity football fell 10 -0 to Heritage Hills last week. The loss drops them to 3-2 on the season. The Titans defense large- ly performed well, keeping Heritage Hills out of the endzone in nine of their 10 drives, only allowing a sin- gle TD when the Patriots were able to start their drive from the GS 18. In typical HH fashion, ball control was the name of the game for the Patriot offense. For 30 :23 of the 40 -minute contest the HH offense me- thodically chipped away at the Titan defenders, aver- aging just under four yards per carry. While the Pats didn't find the endzone of- ten, keeping the ball out of the hands of GS for 75% of the game helped to hold off Gibson Southern from find- ing rhythm on offense. Linebacker Jack Rose led all tacklers with eight solos and four assists. Waylon Finney added three solos and five assists, Jake Rich- ter had six solos and two assists, and Seth Parsons tacked on two solos and four assists. Spending so much time on the sideline watching the defensive squad battle the Patriots, the Titan offense stayed cold most of the eve- ning and were unable to gain much sustained momentum through the contest. Although there were pe- riods that Gibson Southern appeared to be settling into rhythm, the Titans were not able to keep the chains mov- ing long enough to find the endzone. Signal caller Liam Bryant tallied 87 passing yards, averaging more than 10 yards per completion. Bryant and the Titan of- fense were on the cusp of making several big plays to break the game open, but the home run shots re- mained elusive, often only inches away from connect- ing. Maxx Wilson was the leading receiver for GS, pulling in four catches for 40 yards. Maddox Potts caught two for 25 yards, Baker Calvert hauled in one for 13 yards, and Ottie Droste pulled down a reception for nine yards. The Gibson Southern Titan JV team looks to get back on track next week when they travel to Mount Vernon Monday, October 3, with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. Cooper Maurer grimaces as he sprints to the finish of the PAC race. He finished sixth in a time of 16:45. Hayden Pennington finishes the 5K races Saturday morning in seventh place with a time of 16:48. Titan sophomore runner Bai- ley Baker grimaces as she runs up a small hill in traffic. She placed 42nd in the PAC in a time of 22:35. Elizabeth Stecker runs near the front during Saturday's PAC Cross Country meet hosted by Gibson Southern. Steckler fin- ished 30th individually.
