On Thursday they fell to Forest Park 3-1. The Rangers led 2-1 in the first half and added an insurance point in the second to win 3-1. The Titans lost to Evansville North 4-0 on Monday night. The win im- proved North to 14-2 on season. Gibson Southern's record ended 6 -10 overall and 5 -6 in the conference. Gibson Southern will play Vincennes Lincoln at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Wash- ington sectional. Vincennes is 4-12 on the season. 97th. Carmel won the team state championship with a team score of 629 for the two days. Castle placed second with a team score of 643. Freshman Ava Bunker of Columbus North was the medalist and individual state champion. She shot a three-under 69 on Friday and a one-over 73 on Saturday to finish two under for the competition. She was nine strokes better than second place Ashley Kirkland, a sophomore, at Castle, who shot 151 for the tournament including a 72 on Saturday. Freshman football 22-12 win over Boonville By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's fresh- man pushed their record to 5 -0 on the season with a 22-12 win at Boonville on Thursday. The Titans received the opening kickoff but were forced to punt after a third down stop by the Pioneers. Their defense got the ball back after giving up a cou- ple first downs to Boonville. Gunner Alexander made the Pioneers pay when he hit Lloyd Sellers for a 50 yard score as Sellers bounced of several tack- lers. The Titans tacked on two points Alexander found to Noah Kuester in the end- zone on the two-point con- version. Boonville would put to- gether a nice drive and score on a misdirection power. The Titan defense stuffed Boonville's twopoint at- tempt leaving the score 8 -6. Titan Colin Scherer took the ensuing kickoff back to the Boonville 45 -yard line giving them great field po- sition. Alexander hit Toby Pullum on a deep pass for a gain of 30 yards. A fter a few nice runs by Scherer, Alexander would run the football in for another Titan touchdown. The two-point pt attempt failed and the Ti- tans led 14-6. Late in the first half, Boonville again found themselves in the Titan red zone and scored on a pass to their wing. A huge stop on the two- point conversnion attempt left the Titans leading 14-12 at the half. The Titans would kick - off to start the second half and force a three and out by Boonville. Later in the third quar- ter, Alexander found Noah Kuester on a 65 -yard touch- down pass. Lloyd Sellers would pass the ball to Alexander on the two-point conversion put- ting the Titans up 22-12. A fter another stop by the Titan defense, Gibson Southern took over with six minutes left in the game. They were able to put to- gether a ground and pound drive to run out the clock eventually taking a knee as time expired. "Hayden Elrod stepped in on the O-Line and battled all night, helping to create running lanes and give the quarterback time to make throws," said Freshamn Coach Chandler McKee. He added, "Jayden Tapia and Ryan Spink caused trouble in the Boonville backfield all game. Both ap - plying pressure and sack- ing the opposing quarter. The freshmen are on the road again next Saturday as they take on Floyd Central and put their 5 -0 record on the line against another 5A opponent. Titans tennis falls in sectional By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern boys tennis team lost in their first round match of the section- al to Evansville North on Wednesday. North won the match 5 -0. Both doubles teams went to three sets with the singles matches falling in straight sets. John and Noah Kiesel at number one doubles beat William Cusic and Gable Wil- ke 6 -2 in the first set. But the North pair rallied, winning the second set 6 -1 and then the final and deciding set 6 -4. At number two doubles Grant Wade and Lucas Church opened with a 6 -4 win in the first set, but then fell 6 -3 in the second and 6 -2 in the third set. In singles play, Jake Deck- er lost 6 -3, 6 -1 to North's Na- than Mitchell at number one singles. Landon Kiesel was beat- en by Jacob Hafele 6 -1, 6 -2 at number two doubles and Eliott Church lost 6 -4, 6 -3 to Ryan Bernfeld at number three singles. "We were playing some really good tennis at the end of the season but ran into North who just happened to be playing even better ten- nis. The guys played really hard and tried to execute the game plan. Unfortunate- ly, everything has to end at some point and we are disap- pointed ours had to end last night," said Titan Coach Kyle Deboard. He added, "This season was not lacking excitement. So many of our matches this season were close. We fell short a few nights that could have gone either way. I'm really proud of how hard the guys worked this season to improve and hope to keep that improvement going into next year." TITANS SWEEP FOREST PARK Gibson Southern closed out their regular season with a 5 -0 sweep of Forest Park on Monday. At number one singles, Decker beat the Rangers' Kris Fuhrman 6 -2, 6 -4. Landon Kiesel at number two singles beat Conner Tretter 6 -0, 6 -3, while Eliott Church at three singles won 6 -0, 6 -0. In doubles the Kiesel brother John and Noah beat Landen Marks and Bryson Partenheimer in a tiebreaker after losing the first set 6 -4. They rebounded the second set for a 6 -2 win then in a 10 -point tiebreaker won 10 -8 as the deciding factor. In junior varsity matches Dylan Bottom and Kelton Lurgin beat Rangers Mad- dox Geyer and Alex Fischer 6 -4. Wyatt Kruse and Landon Schmitt lost 6 -4 to Rangers Jared Burger and Korbyn Pershon. Luke Stoll and Sam Parmer in doubles fell 6 -3, 6 -0 to EJ Brosmer and Brock Schuler of Forest Park. Blake Elpers directs a ball downfield to teammates in the center of the field against Forest Park.
