Barr Reeve won the match 5 - 0. Pike Central's number one singles player, Jaime Sallee, lost a competitive match that was determined by a couple of games in each set. Alexis Buse won the first set 6 -3, but Salle fought back in the sec- ond set, eventually losing 7-5. The Vikings' Beth Graber beat Ella McGuire 6 -2, 6 -2, at number two singles. Ash- lynn Kirk moved up from ju- nior varsity to the number three singles spot for Pike Central. She fell 6 -1, 6 -1, to Liv Emmons. Barr Reeve also won both doubles matches. At num- ber one doubles Dylan De- Coursey and Claire Harrison beat Chargers Reagan Craig and Shelby Keeker 6 -1, 6 -0 ; while Lilian Mann and Eibh- lin Teague, at number two doubles, fell to Kaitlyn Wood and Allie Robinson of Barr Reeve, 6 -1, 6 -1. Lady Chargers fall to Hatchets By Andy Heuring Pike Central ran into one of the best teams in southern In- diana and conference cham- pion Washington on Thurs- day and rescheduled match. Washington showed why they are conference champions winning 5 -0. Pike Central's singles play- ers all lost 6 -0, 6 -0. At num- ber one doubles Reagan Craig and Shelby Keeker came close to winning a set. A fter falling 6 -0 in the first set to Kencia Leavassey and Sydney McKim, the Charger pair rallied to a 6 -6 tie in the second set before losing a tie- breaker . Lilian Mann and Eibhlin teague at number two dou- bles fell 6 -1, 6 -0. Pike Central's record is 5 - 14 overall, and 3-8 in the con- ference. PC falls to Hatchets in heart-wrenching 3-2 loss By Mike Sandifar In yet another heart-wrenching loss, Coach Dustin Powell's Pike Central Charger Baseball Team fell to host Washington 3-2 in eight innings in a Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) encounter last Thursday evening. The host Hatchets took a 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning, and that lead held un- til the top of the fourth frame when Charger hitters tagged Washington hurler Matt Hin- kle for a pair of runs to take a narrow 2-1 advantage. The inning started with junior Kendric Sorgius ham- mering a line drive double to right field, then classmate Jagar Dent worked Hinkle for a walk to put runners on first and second, with no outs for the Chargers. The next hitter, sopho- more Kannon Garcia hit a sharp grounder to third, and the Hatchet third base- man stepped on the bag for a force out on the fielder's choice play. That put Dent at second and Garcia on first with just one out and sophomore Zach Miller the next Charger bats- man. A fter fouling off three pitches, Miller poked a sin- gle to right field to score Dent from second to knot the score at 1-1. Garcia raced to third base on the play. Senior Harley May was the next Charger to face Hinkle, and May singled on a 1-1 pitch to score Garcia from third to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. Miller moved to second on the play, and with May on first, Pike Central Coach Dustin Powell gave the dou- ble steal sign, and the duo successfully advanced on the play to put runners on sec- ond and third with just one out. But that's all the visitors could get in the inning, as back-to-back outs ended the Pike Central scoring threat. Pike Central pitcher Isaac Burdette gave the Hatchets nothing to hit in the bottom of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, and Hinkle did not allow a Charger score in the top of the fifth, sixth, and sev- enth frames, as the scored re- mained 2-1 in favor of Pike Central. That brought the game to the bottom of the seventh in- ning, with the Chargers cling- ing to the slim 2-1 advantage. That advantage disap- peared in the bottom of the seventh, when the hosts scored on an unearned run to tie the score at 2-2 and send the contest into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, May pounded a two-out dou- ble to left field, and though he made good contact with the baseball, senior Evan Cond- er, the next Charger to bat, hit a fly ball to left field that was caught by the Washing- ton left fielder to end the in- ning, with the score still knot- ted at 2-2. Washington opened the bottom of the eighth frame with a single, and the second Hatchet of the inning to face Burdette worked the Charger hurler for a walk to put run- ners on first and second with no outs. Pike Central elected to intentionally walk the next Hatchet to step into the bat- ter's box to load the bases. The next Washington bat- ter hit a sharp line drive to left field, but freshman Al- bert Whitehead caught the ball and held the runners for the first out of the inning, with no damage. Zeb Tolliver then stepped into the batter's box for the Hatchets, and hit a walk-off single to center field to score Olsen Kroeger to end the game at 3-2. Burdette allowed just four hits in his eight and a third in- nings on the mound for Pike Central in a tough loss for him and his teammates. The Chargers had six hits in the conference outing, led by Sorgius and May, each knocking out a pair of hits in the game, while Miller and Burdette both had one had one hit in the fray. Sor - gius, May, and Burdette all touched Hinkle for a double. Both Dent and May were hit by a pitch to get to first base another time, while Whitehead walked twice in the encounter, and Burdette and Dent each earned a free pass to first base to give the Chargers 12 baserunners in the battle. The loss left the Chargers with a 2-14 overall record, in- cluding an 0 -9 league mark. Pike Central was sched- uled to host Vincennes last Friday, and on Saturday, the Chargers were slated to play Wood Memorial at Pike Cen- tral. Pike Central's Lu- cas Taylor tees off on hole 10 at Sultan's Run at the start of the PAC Championships. Arri McDonald warms up on the practice green at Sultan's Run before heading out to the course for the PAC Championships. Golf team wins three-way meet By Andy Heuring Pike Central's golf team won a three-way meet at Fen- drich in Evansville last Thurs- day as all five players broke 50. The Chargers shot a 175, which was one stroke bet- ter than North Posey and 38 better than host Evansville Bosse. Pike Central's five players were all within three shots of each other. Nathan Snyder had the low score for the Char- gers with a 44, Cobey McK- inney was one stroke back at 45 and Arri McDonald at 46. Both Peyton Howald and Lu- cas Taylor had 47s. Pike Central placed sec- ond in the a four-team meet at the French Lick Donald Ross course last Wednesday. Arri McDonald shot a 43 to lead the way for the Chargers. Tyler Craig had a 47 and Pey- ton Howald 49. Cobey McK- inney's 52 rounded out team's 192 on the historic course that in 1924 hosted a major PGA tournament, which was won by Walter Hagen. Springs Valley High School won the meet with a 166. Co- rydon Central tied with Pike Central and South Central was fourth with 216. "It was a great experience for the team to get to play such an historic and beautiful course," said Charger Coach Jarrod Gideon. The Chargers played in the Pocket Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at Sultan's Run in Jasper, but were unable to complete it as storms hit the area. Coach Gideon said the five players had completed between eight and 10 holes when they were pulled off the course due to lightning. He said they were taken off the course three times before it was decided to finish the competition on Tuesday, May 17.
