Charger Baseball victorious over Trojans By Mike Sandifar Junior Kendric Sorgius ham- mered a home run and hit a pair of doubles in three official at bats at Pike Central Saturday to lead the host Chargers to an 8 -2 non-con- ference victory over Wood Memo- rial in high school baseball play. Senior Harley May started on the mound for Pike Central, and he went the distance, tossing a three-hitter in seven innings of work. May struck out 11 Trojans and walked just one in the contest. The visiting Trojans opened the scoring in the diamond encounter by scoring a single run to take a quick 1-0 lead after one-half in- ning of play, but the host Char- gers tagged Wood Memorial for four runs in the bottom of the first frame to give May all the runs he needed, as the hosts took a 4-1 ad- vantage at the end of the first in- ning. May held the Trojans without a run in the top of the second, third, and fourth innings, while the Chargers added to their lead in the bottom of the third and fourth innings by scoring a run in each inning to give the eventual win- ners a 6 -1 lead after four innings of baseball. In the top of the fifth, Wood Memorial managed to push a run across the plate on May to move within 6 -2, but May shut the Tro- jans down in the sixth and sev- enth innings, while Pike Central scored two more runs in the bot- tom of the sixth to account for the final 8 -2 score. In addition to Sorgius' three-for- three at the plate, including a dou- ble, May, juniors Isaac Burdette and Jagar Dent (double) and soph- omores Zach Miller all had one hit on the day, giving the Chargers nine hits in the winning effort. The game was cleanly played Lady Chargers back on the winning trail By Andy Heuring Pike Central had a tough week in softball, but Monday they grabbed the lead and never looked back as they went on to win 6 -3 over Evans- ville North. Pike Central had faced North Posey, Tecumseh and Gibson South- ern last week. They are ranked num- ber 1 in 1A, number 1 in 2A and num- ber 4 in 3A. But that was all behind them Monday night. In the Chargers' first at bat of the game, down 0 -2 in the count, Brailey Mills hit four foul balls before catch- ing the eighth pitch and lining it into left field for a double. She then stole third and came home when Karley Kavanaugh grounded out to second base for the Chargers' first run. Pike Central would add two more in the fourth inning. Avery Hunt got the inning started with a double to center. Alyna Sharp then doubled on a line drive to center that scored Jaidyn Gogel, who was a courtesy runner for Hunt. Sophie Carnahan's sacrifice bunt to the pitcher moved Sharp to third. Chloe Williams drew a one-out walk to put runners at first and third. Tessa Vinnedge was put in as a courtesy runner for Williams, who was pitching. Vinnedge stole sec- ond. Lexie Onyett grounded out to the second baseman, but it scored Go- gel for a 3-0 lead. Williams on the mound continued to mow down the Huskies and sat them down in order in five of the first six innings, allowing only one hit. In the bottom of the sixth, Pike scored three more runs they would end up needing. Hunt hit a hard ground ball to second and reached on an error to start the inning. Sharp ripped a line drive to center field for a single, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Carnahan again laid down a sac- rifice bunt that advanced Hunt and Sharp to second and third with one out. Williams helped her cause, hitting Sliding into third Charger Macey Stilwell slides into third base under the tag of Gibson Southern's Ally Malone during their game Saturday. See story on page 4.
