Winslow completes new playground equipment installation The new playground equipment is up at the Winslow baseball fields, thanks to volunteers that came out Saturday, for a Winslow clean-up day at the park. Mulch is still needed around the equipment, but there is even a little table and some benches under the structure where you can sit and relax, or have a snack. Memorial Day observances By James Capozella Coleman Stewart, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3587 and Winslow American Legion will conduct observances honoring veterans of all wars by visiting at total of 29 cem- eteries and the Pike County Court House this coming Me- morial Day. Honors rendered will con- sist of a devotion, 21-gun sa- lute and Taps. The first stop in the north will be Old Town Cemetery at 7:25 am. The first stop in the south will be 7 a.m. at Martin Cemetery near Glezen. At 10 :45 am the Peters- burg VFW will have an ex- tended Walnut Hills Memori- al Program following the first eight cemetery observances performed by the Petersburg VFW members. Four more cemeteries are on the Memo- rial Day schedule following Walnut Hills. Post Command- er Chris Kinman asks that res- idents "take a few minutes on the Memorial Day holiday to visit the grave of a veteran, family or friend. It is a way to show gratitude to the one who paid the ultimate price for our freedom." U.S. flags on poles should be flown at half mast Memo- rial Day morning and then raised to the top of the pole at noon. Members of Peters- burg VFW Post 3587 cordially invite the public to attend the VFW Memorial Day salute at any of the locations where ob- servances are being conduct- ed. Grave site flags are avail- able at the 1202 East Main Street VFW Post 3587 build- ing. Individuals and organi- zations can pick up flags for placement on veterans graves at 1202 E Main St. A cemetery custodian can draw the proper number of flags for each use. If veterans are buried in a fam- ily or non-custodial cemetery, then an individual is invited to draw the flags for this use. It is requested that custodi- ans and individuals retrieve the flags after Memorial Day and save them for future use. Students re- searched prominent individuals in history and made a poster with a bio on the character.
