Glezen Center St. • Petersburg • 812-354-9909 2134 E MAIN STREET, PETERSBURG | C A L L 812 - 380 - 7453 North Posey blanks Chargers Friday By Mike Sandifar Visiting North Posey topped Pike Central 13-0 in Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) play in a game short- ened by the IHSA A 10 -run rule at Pike Central Friday evening in high school base- ball action. The game was the third in four days for the weary Char- gers, and left PCHS at 2-14 on the season overall, including 0 -9 in conference outings. The Vikings jumped on the Chargers for seven runs in the top half of the first in- ning, and in the bottom of the second frame, North Posey hit the hosts for another four runs to take an insurmountable 11- 0 advantage in quick fashion. Pike Central held North Posey without a run in the top of the third inning, but in the top of the fourth, the Vi- kings pushed a pair of runs past home plate to make the score 13-0. As in the third inning, the visitors did not score in the fifth inning, but when the Chargers failed to score in the fourth and fifth innings the game was called due to the 10 -run rule. North Posey used a trio of pitchers against the Char- gers to toss a combined two- hit shutout against the hosts, as only Junior Isaac Burdette and freshman Albert White- head were able to tag the North Posey pitchers for a hit, while Whitehead, junior Ken- dric Sorgius, and junior Jagar Dent all reached first base via a walk. Of the 13 runs scored by the Vikings, only eight were earned, as the usually reli- able Charger defense "boot- ed" the ball around five times in the league encounter, while the visitors played errorless baseball throughout the five innings played. The winners pushed their 13 runs across home plate on 10 hits, including doubles by Clay Douglas, Easton Luigs, and Jake Will and a grand slam homer by Alec Elpers. Elpers tagged his grand slam in the first inning, after the first six Vikings to step into the batter's box reached base via an error, a double, a walk, a single, another dou- ble, and a walk to score a trio of runs and leave the bases jammed for Elpers. With no outs, and the vis- itors leading 3-0, Elpers parked an 0 -1 count to left field to put North Posey up 7- 0 advantage, and the eventu- al winners never looked back. The next Viking lined out to Charger senior Devin Car- lisle at second, while the next Viking batter singled to put a runner on first with one out. The next two Vikings to step to the plate hit a fly ball to Whitehead in left field and a line drive to senior Evan Conder in right field, respec- tively for outs No. 2 and No. 3 to end the top half of the first frame, but the damage had al- ready been done. The Vikings scored four runs in the top of the second inning to take an 11-0 lead, then came back for two runs in the top of the fourth to ac- count for the final 13-0 score. Pike Central was sched- uled to play at Wood Memo- rial High School in Oakland City last Saturday at noon to close out the week. The Chargers were slated to take on Northeast Dubois in a non-conference battle on Monday, and last night (Tues- day), Pike Central was sched- uled to play Mt. Vernon in a conference fray at Mt. Vernon. Chargers fall to Marksmen 14-12 By Mike Sandifar In perhaps the most heart-wrenching loss in years, Pike Central fell to vis- iting Tell City, 14-12, last Tues- day, May 10 in Pocket Athlet- ic Conference (PAC) baseball action at Pike Central. Leading 12-3 going into the top of the seventh inning, it ap- peared the Chargers were on cruise control and on their way to their third win of the season, when everything that could possibly go wrong did exactly that for the hosts. Starting pitcher Kendric Sorgius got the first Tell City batter, Nick McDowell, to hit the ball to the right of the mound, and Sorgius fielded the ball and tossed it to first base for an easy out. With one out and a 12-3 advantage for Pike Central, it looked good for the hosts, but once again, the Yogi Ber- ra saying, "it ain't over, til it's over" became ever so evident as the Chargers began to un- ravel. The next Marksman bat- ter was Jaxon Naviaux, and Naviaux hit a bullet grounder deep in the hole to shortstop, where freshman Noah Meece made a diving stab and came up with the baseball. Meece jumped to his feet and made a great throw to first, but the umpire called Naviaux safe. That put Naviaux on first, with one out and PCHS still holding a huge 12-3 lead over the visitors. That brought Spencer San- dage to the plate, and the bur- ley first baseman blasted a line shot to deep left field for a double that scored Naviaux from first to make the score 12-4 with one out. The Marksmen's Kaid- en Casebolt, the next batter, reached first on an error, and Sandage raced to third, giving Tell City runners on first and third, with still one out. That brought Keaton Lloyd to the plate for TCHS, and Lloyd a line drive single to center. Sandage rounded third on the hit, and the throw to the plate was not in time, allow- ing Lloyd to advance to sec- ond and Casebolt to third. With the score by Sandage, the Marksmen moved to with- in 12-5, with still one out. At that point, Pike Cen- tral Coach Dustin Powell was forced to take Sorgius off the mound, due to the Indiana High School Athletic Associ- ation (IHSA A) pitch rule— Pitchers are allowed only so many pitches in a game. Tell City's Alex Stiff walked on a 3-2 count to load the bas- es, to bring JC Buckendahl to the plate. Buckendahl con- nected on a single to right field to score Casebolt and Lloyd to make the score 12-7, but Stiff was called out trying to return to second (he started to third, but attempted to return to sec- ond on the hit and play.) That action on the field put the score at 12-7, with the Chargers still on top, and the Marksmen with two outs and Buckendahl on first base. Aden Dodson, the next Tell City batter, walked on a 3-1 pitch to give the eventual winners runners on first and second, with two outs, and the Chargers up by five, still hold- ing a 12-7 advantage. Gage Meunier was the next batter for the visitors, and Meunier hit a 2-1 pitch for a line drive single to center field to load the bases for Tell City. That brought McDowell back to the plate for the sec- ond time in the inning, and McDowell walked on a 3-2 pitch to score Buckendahl and make the score 12-8. Naviaux, who barely made it to first base on a called safe the first time at bat in the top of the seventh, left no doubt on this trip to the plate, as he hammered 1-1 pitch to left field for a triple to clear the bases and reduce the Pike Central advantage to just 12- 11. With still two outs, San- dage came back to the bat- ter's box for his second time at the plate in the inning. San- dage started the scoring bar- rage for the Marksmen with his double earlier in the inning to score Naviaux to make the score 12-4. This trip to the plate, San- dage hit the first pitch for a line drive single to center to once again score Naviaux to tie the game at 12-12—and Tell City was still not finished. Casebolt, who reached on an error in his first time at the plate in the inning, was up next, and this time, there was no error, as he poked the base- ball to left field for a single and move Sandage to third base. With runners on first and third, Lloyd on his second try at the plate in the frame, doubled to left field to score Sandage and give the Marks- men the lead at 13-12. Case- bolt motored to third on the hit, giving the visitors runners on second and third and the one-run lead. Stiff stepped into the bat- ter's box next, and though he struck out, he raced to first on a third strike dropped ball and Casebolt scored on the play to give the Marksmen a two-run cushion at 14-12. Buckendahl, the 16th bat- ter of the inning for Tell City, popped up to short on a 2-2 pitch to end the inning for the Marksmen, but the visitors had touched the hosts for 11 runs in the frame to take the lead from Pike Central. Tell City made a pitching change for the bottom of the seventh inning, moving San- dage from first base to the mound, and Sandage struck out the side in order in the bot- tom of the seventh, throwing just 15 pitches. The Marksmen out-hit the Chargers in the contest 14-8. Eight Pike Central batters also reached first base via walks, giving the hosts 16 base run- ners in the encounter, while six Tell City hitters found their way to first on walks. Sorgius led the Chargers at the plate, going two for three in official at bats, with a walk. One of his hits was a double that provided three RBIs for Pike Central. Freshman Albert White- head, juniors Isaac Burdette, Jagar Dent, sophomore Kan- non Garcia, and senior Har- ley May all had one hit for the Chargers. The loss left Pike Central at 2-12 on the 2022 season, in- cluding 0 -7 in conference play. The Chargers had little time by both teams, as Pike Cen- tral committed just one er- ror in the seven-inning, while Wood Memorial did not com- mit an error in the field. The victory gave Pike Cen- tral a 3-14 record on the 2022 season, including 0 -9 in con- ference play. The Chargers were sched- uled to tackle Northeast Du- bois on Monday (May 16th) in another non-conference outing, and on Tuesday (May 17th), PCHS was slated to play Mt. Vernon High School in Mt. Vernon in a Pocket Ath- letic Conference (PAC) battle. BASEBALL Continued from page 1 Pike Central senior Harley May (14) slides home for a run in the 2nd inning in last Tuesday's (May 10) 14- 12 loss to Tell City in a Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) Baseball outing. Pitcher Kendric Sorgius (11) bangs out a base hit in last week's 14-12 loss to Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Tell City. The Marksmen came from behind to win the game in the seventh inning. to dwell on the brutal loss, as on Thursday, the hard-luck, young baseball squad trav- eled to Washington for anoth- er PAC battle, and on Friday, Pike Central was scheduled to play North Posey at Pike Cen- tral in conference action. On Saturday, Wood Memorial was scheduled to take on the Char- gers at Pike Central to con- clude four games in six days.
