National Volunteer Week salutes Pike County volunteers By Brooke Goble 4-H Extension Educator Each year, thousands of volunteers in Indiana do- nate their time and energy to make their communities a bet- ter place to live. These volun- teers will be among the mil- lions across the country who will be spotlighted during the 48 th anniversary of National Volunteer Week, April 17th- April 23rd, 2022. One group that relies heav- ily on volunteers is the Indi- ana 4-H Program. In 2021 more than 13,000 youth and adults volunteer in some ca- pacity with 4-H. In Pike Coun- ty, 68 volunteers, both youth and adult, serve as club lead- ers, project leaders, commit- tee members, and in adviso- ry capacities for the 4-H Youth Development Program. "We enjoy thanking our volunteers for their service all year long, but especial- ly during National Volunteer Week," says Alex Mahrenholz 4-H Youth Development and ANR Extension Educator. "Our 4-H Volunteers are true heroes who give count- less hours of their time and energy to ensure our com- munity's youth can take ad- vantage of all the opportuni- ties 4-H provides" Volunteers spend numer- ous hours working on tasks, such as helping a child with a 4-H project, leading a proj- ect to serve the community, or helping organize an event at the county fair. "The reason I continue to volunteer in our 4-H program, because it is a wonderful op- portunity for our youth to be part of a great activity where they get to learn new things," says Jackie Furman, 4-H Vol- unteer for 38 years. 4-H Program volunteers are just one group of volun- teers who carry out the mis- sion of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Ser- vice. Volunteers are involved in every aspect of the Exten- sion Service, including deter- mining the needs of the local residents, planning and imple- menting programs to address the needs, securing resourc- es, and evaluating programs. An example of these volun- teers is the Pike County Ex- tension Board. The five-mem- ber board of appointed county citizens works with the coun- ty Extension staff to plan and oversee Extension activities. "We are so grateful to have so many great volunteers, not just in our 4-H program, but also in our community," says Brooke Goble, 4-H Youth De- velopment and HHS Exten- sion Educator. "We couldn't do the work that we do with- out the continued support and hard work from our vol- unteers and community." The work of Extension vol- unteers is continuous. Every day volunteers lend a hand to make Extension programs more beneficial to Pike Coun- ty residents. Those interest- ed in joining the team of Ex- tension Volunteers are invit- ed to contact the Pike County Extension Office at 812-354- 6838.
