NEWS! 812-354-8500 SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, April 18 and 22, 1947 The Petersburg High School Athletic banquet was held Tues- day evening in the basement of the First Methodist church. A dinner was served by the la- dies of the church at 6:30. Group singing and addresses by Coach Fisher and his assis- tant, Mr. Weathers were greatly enjoyed and appreciated. An old land grant convey- ing title of possession of a tract of land in what is now Logan Township to Joseph Loveless was signed by John Quincy Adams, President of the Unit- ed States, November 15, 1826. The 126 -year-old document in- scribed on yellowed parchment remains in the possession of Jack Loveless, grandson of the original grantee. The farm also has been in continuous posses- sion of the same family and is now occupied by the Jack Love- less family. The document was issued from the General Land Office in Vincennes. Rita Briggs, 17, sadly stands on the sidelines watching her former teammates at Ayer, Mass., High School, where she was the star catcher until an "it's a boy's game" league rul- ing barred her. She made the team in 1945 during a boy short- age, and has turned down pro- fessional offers since. Mont- gomery; Wanda Lois Miley to Arnold Critchlow were wed on Saturday, April 5, at the home of Rev. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, Apr. 19, 1962 Miss Iona Froman, busi- ness teacher at Princeton high school, has been initiated in- to the Theta Chapter of Delta Pi Epsilon. A national honor- ary graduate fraternity for men and women in business educa- tion. The membership is by invi- tation only and requirement for membership is high. Miss Fro- man is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Froman, north of Spurgeon. The State Board of Law Ex- aminers report that William Donald Richardson was one of 72 persons who passed the bar examination given March 1. Mr. Richardson, with the other applicants, will be admitted to the bar in a ceremony before the Indiana Supreme Court in its court room at 10 a.m. Wednes- day, May 2. Mr. Richardson graduated from Indiana Uni- versity Law School in January of this year. The Annual Jaycee Easter Egg hunt on Sunday afternoon at Hornaday park estimates that nearly 3,000 children will be on hand to hunt this year. The hunt is for children from one to 12 years of age. There will be $200 given in cash prizes for the lucky winners of the redeem- able eggs. The Coca Cola Bot- tling Company is also donating 50 cartons of Cokes which will be given as prizes. Speaking of Pike county 4- H clubs in parlance of the race track, "They're off! " Another big year has started for more than 500 Pike county young- sters enrolled in this extra cur- ricular activity that stresses community life, good fellowship and citizenship. Projects cover a wide range of interest. Alpha- Petersburg basketball team—1914-15 The Petersburg basketball team consisted of, seated, Byron Heuring and Floyd Burch. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, Apr. 20, 1972 Petersburg Elementary School fifth grade planted a tree, the tulip poplar, on the sec- ond Friday in April, in honor of Arbor Day. Stories, posters, and pictures have been written by the pupils about their value and care. Twelve wild turkeys were re- leased on area VI of the Pato- ka State Fish and Wildlife area south of the old Blackfoot tipple. This is the second release of the turkeys. The first being 21 wild trapped turkeys released at the Pike State Forest in Oct. 1969. Winslow fifth grade is spon- soring a recycling project to col- lect paper, glass and aluminum cans in observance of Earth week. Class sponsors are Mrs. Helen Lewis, Mrs. Marie Al- dridge and Mrs. Jennie Erwin. Dwight Pride, Petersburg, was accidentally shot in the chest Monday. Pride picked up the single shot 22 caliber ri- fle from a gun rack in a pick- up truck parked in front of the trailer home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Pride. While standing near the truck the shot was discharged. He was taken to the Daviess County Hospital in critical condition. Births: To Mr. and Mrs. Larry E. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, Apr. 17, 1997 Michael Johnson of Peters- burg has been named a Unit- ed States national award win- ner in mathematics. Johnson, who attends Pike Central Mid- dle School, was nominated for this national award by Mike Whitten, a math teacher at the school. He will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, which is published nationally. He is the son of John and Mary Johnson. His grandparents are Atwood and Delores Johnson and Bonnie Kerr, all of Peters- burg. A Pike Central student was seriously injured Sunday at about 5 p.m. as he was return- ing from the Spring musical in which he had performed. Ryan Bowman suffered several frac- tures and internal injuries when his car hit a culvert and flipped upside down. He was in front of Walt Hindahl's residence about two miles south of Pike County Deputy Sheriff Todd Meadors. Ryan was trapped in the vehi- cle for about an hour before he could be extricated by Res- cue Squad 51 and taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville by LifeFlight. He suffered a broken hip and leg, as well as internal injuries. Meadors said his spleen was removed Mon- day morning in surgery. He was listed in serious condi- tion in intensive care Tuesday morning. His twin brother Rus- sell (Rusty) was also in the car but sustained only minor inju- ries, the worst bing a cut to his head. The boys were going from the last performance of the Pike Central's Spring Musical "West- side Story," to the cast party in Petersburg.
