Vernon By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's girls ten- nis team rolled over Mt. Vernon 5 -0 in their season opener, Mon- day night. The Lady Titans in 10 sets of tennis lost only eight games. "It is always good to win the season opener and get off on the right foot. It is natural for players to have some nerves, es- pecially when they are new to the varsity lineup," said Titan Coach Matt Grabbe. "Our entire team played well up and down the lineup. We have more experience in sin- gles at this point in time and are trying to adjust to new doubles partners. It takes time for them to develop chemistry in doubles, as they have not played much to- gether yet. There is much more upside to come," added Grabbe. Gracia Jones at number one singles won 6 -2, 6 -1. Helen Kie- sel beat Lily Denning 6 -0, 6 -2 at number two singles; and num- ber three singles Sydney Pur- cell beat Mt. Vernon's Saide Redman 6 -0, 6 -2. The Titans also swept the doubles matches as well. Lil- ly Schmitt and Lillie Booth at number one doubles won 6 -0, 6 -1 over Grace Lueder and Lily Tenbarge. At number two dou- bles, Kelsey Spindler and Gabby Smitha skunked Mt. Vernon's Alison Gansman and Grace Ten- barger. In junior varsity action Becca Smith beat Reilly Schelhorn 6 -2 in a one set match. Schelhorn then in a second one set match beat Gibson Southern's Charity Baylor 6 -1. May. He added, "Tucker pitched a very solid game. She was locked in and focused from the very first pitch until the last pitch of the game." Adamson was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs; Long was 2 for 4 with a double; Olivia Money was 1 for 2; Higgi was 1 for 2; and Brenna Blume was 1 for 4. The win improved Gibson Southern to 6 -3 on the sea- son.
