A T I M E T O R E J O I C E A N D CEL E B R A T E Tecumseh falls to Titans' win streak By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern remained undefeated in the 2022 high school baseball season here Thursday evening by pound- ing Pocket Athletic Confer- ence (PAC) opponent Tecum- seh 12-1 for their fifth straight victory. Senior Colton Okes pitched a four-hitter and allowed just one run in a contest halted af- ter five complete innings due to the 10 -run rule. The winners connected for nine hits (to go along with six walks and two hit batters), in- cluding a home run (senior Levi Dickerson) and four dou- bles (Brayden Malone, Kaden Hurless, Oliver Hamilton, and Regan Farmer, all seniors). In addition, Malone popped a pair of singles, going three of four at the plate to go with his double, while Dickerson added a single to his home run in four at-bats for the Titans. Noah Bryant slammed a line drive single to left field for the other Gibson Southern hit. The Titans scored in the first inning, with Malone smacking a line drive dou- ble to open the game and put a runner in scoring position. Senior Drew Foster ground- ed to short for the first Gibson Southern out of the frame, ad- vancing Malone to third. Hurless then reached first on an error by the first base- man, with Malone scoring on the play to put the eventu- al winners up 1-0, with Ham- ilton the next Gibson South- ern hitter. Hamilton grounded out to the shortstop, but Hurless went to third base on the play, giving the Titans a runner at third with two outs. Maurer hit a hard shot to the Brave shortstop, who threw Maurer out at first to end the top half of the first with the visitors leading 1-0. Tecumseh could not get a run across in the bottom of the first inning, and Gibson Southern did not score in the top of the second frame to keep the score at 1-0. That quickly changed in the bottom of the second, when ju- nior Dax Bailey tagged Okes with a home run on the first pitch of the inning to knot the score at 1-1. That would be the last run the Braves could plate against Okes, and the score remained at 1-1 until the top of the fourth inning when the Titans scored four runs to give Okes a 5 -1 cushion. In the top of the fifth frame, Gibson Southern jumped on Tecumseh for seven more runs to give the Titans a com- manding 12-1 advantage af- ter four and one-half innings of baseball. Okes continued his mas- tery over the Braves to start the bottom of the fifth inning by striking out the first batter to step into the plate, then get- ting the next batter to hit a pop fly for the second out of the in- ning, with junior Brody Julian coming to bat with two outs. Julian hit a line drive to cen- ter field for the Braves to put a Lady Titans dominate Patriots By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com To say the Lady Titan ten- nis team was dominant in their win over Heritage Hills is really an understatement. They won 5 -0 winning each match, they also won all 10 sets played, but you don't get an understanding of just how dominant they were until you look at the game scores. Gib- son Southern won 60 games to four for the Patriots. Titan Gracia Jones at num- ber one singles won 6 -1, 6 -0 over Liz Gehlhausen. Num- ber two singles player Helen Kiesel won 6 -0, 6 -1 over Phil- ea Fischer. Gibson Southern's Sydney Purcell beat Kiersten Gogel 6 -0, 6 -1 at number three singles. They were even more domi- nate in their doubles matches. The Titans' duo of Lillies (Lil- lie Booth and Lilly Schmitt) won 6 -1, 6 -0 over Emma Ja- cob and Arrissa Hall, at num- ber one doubles. Gabby Smitha and Kelsey Spinder for the second match in a row beat their number two doubles opponents 6 -0, 6 -0. The trend continued in the JV matches. Maddie Boes beat Ella Commens 8 -1; Al- yssa Welte beat Autum Fquay 8 -0 ; Maura Kluesner and Wmilee Bullock beat Angelic- ca Rerecich and Greta Fischer 8 -1; and Mallory Maurer and Lindsey Garbers beat Fernan- da Lara and Courtney Somer- lott 8 -0. Helen Kiesel hits back a forehand shot at Philea Fischer of Heritage Hills on Thursday night. She won 6-0, 6-1, and the Lady Titans won 5-0. By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern came from behind to beat Mater Dei 3-1 on Monday. Lauryn Adam- son's two-out double drove in two runs, to put the Titans ahead in the top of the sixth inning, while Alexis Tucker was pitching a one-run gem. She spaced seven hits over seven innings and walked on- ly one runner and struck out three with no earned runs. Mater Dei got on the board first when Chelsea Merkley scored in the second inning. Merkley hit a one-out single then advanced on an error before Emma Bullock's sin- gle brought her in. Tucker managed to strand two runners in the third in- ning after Olivia Schmitt and Emma Goebel had back to back one-out singles. Over the next four innings she didn't al- low more than four batters an inning. Gibson Southern struggled to get on their offense going until the fifth inning. Adam- son led off the fifth inning with a single and advanced to third base on a double by Sydney Long. Adamson then tagged and scored on a sacri- fice fly by Ally Malone. They took control of the game in the sixth inning. Tay- lor Fonte hit a one-out single. EmmaLee Higgs hit two-out single, to advance Fonte be- fore Adamson's double on an 0 -1 pitch put the Lady Titans up 3-1. "Adamson had a very good game with very good base running and drove in the oth- er two runs with a timely dou- ble," said Titan Coach Gary Lady Titans overcome deficit to defeat Mater Dei Olivia Cox, playing third, dives for a line shot that went just foul.
