Enjoy a blind date with a book at Petersburg Free Library By Sherri Sebella Looking for a different type of blind date this month? Well, look no further than your lo- cal Little Free Library in Pe- tersburg, located at Hornady Park, throughout the month of February. Volunteer Little Free Li- brary stewards Kayla and Fa- bian Guzman have been busy making the month special for avid readers, by wrapping and titling books according to sub- ject matter, age and type of content. The steward is usually the person who put up the library, which is the case for the Guz- mans. The stewards take care of basic maintenance like keeping the library clean and inviting, but it is up to ev- eryone who uses the library to keep it stocked with good books. Little Free Library is a free book-sharing box where any- one may take a book or share a book. It functions on the hon- or system. Those who take ad- vantage of this special pro- gram do not need to share a book in order to take one. All that is asked, is that if you take a book or two from the library, you try to bring some to share to that same library. Participants are also asked to sign the guest book. Little Free Libraries pro- mote literacy, cultivate the spirit of generosity, and build a sense of community. "There are books for all ag- es," Kayla Mason said. "The age range is written on the bottom of each book, along with a few hints of what the book is about. The books were donated by people in our com- munity." To find Little Free Librar- ies near you, visit the world map of registered Little Free Library book exchanges. Use the search bar above the map to find little library locations in your area. Currently there is one at 309 N 12th Street and one at Hornady Park in Pe- tersburg. https://littlefreeli- brary.org/ourmap/ Little Free Libraries rely on community volunteers and do- nations to succeed. "I started the little librar- ies to promote a love of lit- erature, cultivate the spir- it of generosity, and build a sense of community," Mason said. "When I first thought of the idea, I was going to reach out to my friend, Jim Pell, for help. He was part of the "Dis- cover Downtown Petersburg" group. Unfortunately, Jim passed away before I was able to talk with him. The library is painted crimson and cream in his memory." Little Free Libraries rely on community volunteers and do- nations to succeed. If you have a large book donation, you may leave it in a box under the covered porch at 309 N. 12th Street, in Petersburg. Mone- tary donations will currently go towards registration fees, books, and crafting supplies for special events.
