Poplar Street, Petersburg How many Scriptural problems would be solved, how many seeming contradictions ex- plained, if we were more careful to note the time element, emphasized so strongly in the Word of God. In Romans 5:12, we learn that sin entered the human race by Adam. Then later "the law entered" (verse 20). But still later, the Apos- tle Paul arose to say: "But now, the righteous- ness of God without the law is manifested" (Rom. 3:21). Early in man's history, blood sacrifices were required for acceptance with God (See Gen. 4:4; Heb. 11:4), later circumcision and the Law (Gen. 17:14; Ex. 19:5), and still later, re- pentance and water baptism (Mark 1:4; Acts 2:38). But not until Paul, do we learn of salva- tion by grace through faith alone, on the ba- sis of Christ's finished, all-sufficient work of redemption. This is why the Apostle refers in Gal. 3:23 to "the faith which should afterward be revealed." This is why he declares that our Lord "gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time", and adds: "where unto I am ordained a preacher and an apostle" (I Tim. 2:6,7). Stam A recent headline in the British news shout- ed, "Sunday church service attendance almost halves in 30 years, figures show." The article continues with more bad news, citing Church of England data which shows between 1987 and 2019, Sunday worshipers fell from 1.2 mil- lion to 679,000. Based upon an estimated pop- ulation of 66 million in 2019, slightly over 1% of British citizens attend church. Data from the English Catholic church is not much better. Correspondingly, in 1983, two-thirds of peo- ple in the United Kingdom identified as being Christian, whereas, in 2019, just over a third. In America, the numbers are not as depress- ing, albeit are steadily trending downward. In 2019, 65% of American adults describe them- selves as Christians. This is down 12 % since 2009. 45% of adult Christians attend church weekly. When looking at millennial, people born between 1981-96, only 49 % identify as Christians. There are several reasons given for the steady decline in church members and atten- dance in the U.S. and Europe. The obvious rea- son is the church in America is not reaching the younger generation for Christ. Attrition is out-pacing discipleship. As the older members die, they are not being replaced in like num- ber. Nearly every major denomination is in de- cline. What gives? The most often heard criticism is the church is not listening to the younger crowd. It is not ministering to their needs. The church is ar- chaic, frozen in time and traditions, and cul- turally behind the times. Many churches have heard this criticism and have tailored their ser- vices to cater to the younger crowd. Gone are the pews, hymnals, hymns of faith, choirs, rich liturgy and Bible centered sermons. Worship centers and soft chairs have replaced them along with praise bands, contemporary mu- Well how about that, another week has dis- appeared. It has for the most part been an un- eventful week for our family. There hasn't been anyone sick except our usual sinus drainage which has been going on for years. I drain so much a dentist once told me I was like work- ing in a river. Whenever I lay my head back in the dentist chair it causes me to swallow and swallow which causes the dentist to run the vacuum almost constantly. To start out my week I did my usual chores around the house, which I don't want to put wife out with. It seems as though most ladies have enough on their plate. We save our alu- minum cans. I mash them to cut down on the amount of space they take. I try to keep the floor of our attached garage swept clean be- cause leaves come in so easily through our back door. We use our back door, because we have people come through the garage instead of walking around house to use front door. If someone uses our front door, we know it is a salesman or someone we don't know. There is a sign on our backdoor that says, "Back door guests are the best". "As far as the east is from the west, so far does He re- move our transgressions from us" (Psalm 103:12). The life that God wants you to live is not a fat-free one, but a guilt-free one. God's grace frees you from all guilt. If you lay it down, so that you can be about the business of doing the work God has for you and find- ing your life's purpose. The Bi- ble says that God takes your confessed sin and throws it as far as from the east is from the west. He never remembers it again. The past is gone. He wants you to seek to find His purpose for you today. Let go of guilt, and get on with the life of joy He has for you. If at any time you have no church to attend, feel free to join us for services. Your pres- ence will be appreciated and I'm sure you will feel the bless- ing of God. May God bless each and everyone.
