B-4 Wednesday, Feburar y 2, 2022 The Press-Dispatch match and knew he was going to get everyone's best effort," said Charger wrestling coach Jorden Forderman. "I just really felt confident," said Goeppner about his sec- tional championship. The ju- nior carries a 31-4 record in- to the Bloomington Regional on Saturday, where he faces Brock Higgins of West Vigo, who has a 15 -14 record on the year, in the first round. If he wins that match he will face the winner of Owen Valley's Eli Hinshaw (29 -6) also a ju- nior and Gunner Connaugh- ton 15 -5, a senior from Bed- ford North Lawrence. Goep- pner wrestled in numerous offseason tournaments. "He puts in a lot of work in the off season. He goes to wrestling camps and tourna- ments. Corey loves wrestling and has put in the work during the offseason. He has turned himself into a very good wres- tler," said Froderman. Goeppner said he set three goals for himself this year. 1) win the sectional, 2) place in the regional and 3) place top 3 at the PAC. So far he has checked off two of those three. Charger senior John Can- non placed third for the Char- gers in the 182 pound class. Cannon got a bye in the first round and then pinned Logan Foster of North Knox in the second round. This advanced Cannon to the third round where he lost to Floyd Cen- tral's Bray Emerine by fall. Emerine is 19 -3 on the sea- son and ranked in the top ten 182 pounders in Indiana. Cannon then moved to the consolation bracket where he pinned Seith Kaiser of New Albany, which put Cannon in the third place match against Jasper's Mason Gegogeine. Cannon took care of Gegoge- ine in just 90 seconds for third place. "John had a really tough weight class. There were two guys ranked in the top 10 in that class. John has worked very hard. John has put in more work in the offseason than anyone. He completely changed his body. He went from a strong 145 pounder to a being a big 182 pounder," said Forderman. Cannon, who has a 29 -7 re- cord, will face Alex Rose of Terre Haute South in the first round of the regional. Rose has a 22-3 record. Freshman Paul Thompson also advanced to the region- al with his fourth place finish at 220. Thompson started with a bye in the first round and then beat Tecumseh's Nathan Hoskinson by fall in 4:48 in the second round match. He advanced to the semi-finals where he ran into Jasper's Ashton Schuetter, a senior with a 27-2 record. He lost by fall. This put him in the conso- lation bracket against Bedford NL's Javi Paredes. Thomp- son pinned Paredes in 2:13 to move to the third place match, where he lost by pin to Eric Vanegas of Southridge. Thompson on Saturday will face Christian Verst of Terre Haute South. Verst is a senior with an 11-4 record. Five other wrestlers placed for the Chargers. Jason Stuck- ey at 160 pounds placed fifth. Stuckey beat Bedford NL's Jaxon Powell by pin in 2:47 in the fifth place match. The wrestlers placing in sixth for the Chargers were Kylee Baker at 106, Ryan Gladish at 138 and Hayden Goins at 285.
