We received a note that Calvary Holiness Church at 901 Walnut St. in Petersburg will have VBS until August 6, from 6:30 - 8:15 p.m. Winslow Patoka River is half empty and in some places you can see the limbs or trees sticking out of the water. Temps of in the 90s were hot enough, but when you add in the high humidity, air quality and ozone, with a heat advisory, it's been a hot week, in the day and night. The air has been on everyday and it feels great when you come home to a cool house. We have had no rain since Sunday, July 25, with what I call sprinkles, because we didn't even get a quarter inch. The grass is still growing and the flowers are bloom- ing, but we do need rain, and it may come Friday and Saturday, July 30 and 31. The White River is still to the rim and it has gone down because the fields are grow- ing again from all the water they had. Winslow Library is expanding their parking lot by acquiring the old Hume T V and Appliance and Hume Insurance, then later, it was a church, then a home. Any- way, this building has been torn down this past week and is nearly ready to do their next project to get a parking lot. The library will also have some touch- ups to match the other three sides and fix some trim and gutters. There was one day the backhoe scoop was dipping water out of the basement, where it had collect- ed when they sprayed the bricks as they came down with all the dust. The patch of woods with the spoil banks that almost all of us cousins ex- plored has a new owner, so welcome to the neighborhood Chet McCandless. To those who used to visit the Corner Book Shoppe when Janice was there, the shop has closed for now. The build- ing next door is over half-finished and the name of this place is Out of the Blue. Deb- ra hasn't opened for business yet, but she will open with appointment. It has come a long way from when they started and the transom windows look great above the matching glass doors. One Friday, Tim and Jeanette were at a store in Jasper when Jeanette realized her cigarette case was missing. She had her money and cards in it. She report- ed it to the lost and found, and started to contact places in case it was never found. Then on Sunday, she was notified that her case and all its contents were found. There are still kind and honest stars in this world. The Cadet riding mower and I were having a fun time as Norm took a picture of us. Norm finally got me on the Cadet with a little adjusting of the seat, but not to mow, just to ride through the yards to see how they look after he mowed. It wasn't bad at all until you go over those mole hills, then it shakes you up a bit. I might even like mowing. It was funny to us when we picked up a weedeater to use in the yards to spruce them up and to cut the high weeds in our back small woods. I finally saw how Norm wee- deats and he does it with ease. In no time, the weeds were down. Now I know how the weeds in and around town looked so good each week after their mowing and weedeating had to be done. Ice cream in cups or cones, and milk- shakes can really cool you down on the days we had last week. We went out sev- eral days to get this sweet treat to cool us off. Vernon went with us one day and he introduced me to some Superman ice cream. It's really tasty. Our truck, Ava, was taken in for new front brakes and the alternator switched out to one that works the right way. Our friend, Vernon, was our backup person to get us there and back. We also ate at our favorite Mexican restaurant in Washing- ton and we took the scenic route of Hwy. 57. On another day, we ate at a restaurant in Oakland City. Since Norm has retired, we have been riding around more, just to get out of the house. Not really to go somewhere, like a business, but to take a long drive in a big circle from here to Petersburg to Jas- per to Huntingburg to Arthur to home. Nice to see this area and see the differ- ent houses and yards along the drive. Norm's guitar strumming is getting bet- ter as he learns more tunes to put in his songs. We have started to be competi- tive in our Backgammon games by put- ting each other's players back and also to see how many times we roll doubles. Right now, I believe he is ahead in the game of wins. We are or have been on another trip to take Mom home and I'm staying for awhile to help out with Mom and Deby, who broke her foot, so she can't stand up for a long time. Mom will be back for the Poehlein reunion. Steve Nelson has a dog, Hondo, who is 13 years old and he has been sick with congestive heart failure and cancer. So, on Friday, they had to do what every dog owner doesn't want to do and that is put him to sleep. Since Hondo was a big part of family life, we are so sorry he had to leave. The lights are about to dim for this week, but keep an eye on family and friends. Slow down and see all the won- ders in your area. Stay safe and if a mask is to be worn, do it for the other per- son's safety. As always, smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week. School begins soon.
