B-2 Wednesday, August 4, 2021 The Press-Dispatch SPORTS BRIEFS Hunter Education class set for August 2-6 The Indiana Depart- ment of Natural Resourc- es, Law Enforcement Di- vision, is sponsoring a Hunter Education Class beginning August 2, ac- cording to Keith Thom- as. The class will be at the Sugar Ridge Fish and Wildlife Headquarters, 2310 E. SR 364, Winslow, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. At- tendance in each session is required. Anyone born after De- cember 31, 1986, must successfully complete a DNR offered hunter ed- ucation class to purchase a hunting license. Seat- ing is limited, so go to http;//www.register-ed. com to register. Addition- al information regarding class requirements, con- tent and location is also available on the registra- tion page. Smokey Bear birthday party set for Aug. 7 Patoka Lake will cel- ebrate Smokey Bear's birthday with a party on Saturday, August 7, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pa- toka Lake Nature Center. The party will include a chance to get a picture with Smokey, fire safe- ty games and a special craft to make and take home. The Orange Coun- ty Southeast Township Volunteer Fire Depart- ment will give a special presentation on fire safe- ty, including a jaws of life demonstration, at 11 a.m. The entrance fee of $7 per vehicle for Indi- ana residents and $ 9 for out-of-state vehicles is required for the New- ton-Stewart State Rec- reation Area at Patoka Lake, which is located north of Wickliffe Indiana on State Road 164. Patoka Lake (on.IN.gov/patoka- lake) is at 3084 N. Dillard Road, Birdseye, IN 47513. Bird Hunters' 15th Annual Free Youth Day is Oct. 9 All area youth are in- vited to participate in the Pike County Bird Hunt- ers' Club 15th Annual Brownwells NR A Youth Day on Saturday, Octo- ber 9. Youth ages seven through 18 will find plen- ty of activities, beginning at 8 a.m. with a provided breakfast. The no-charge day in the field includes darts, archery, BB gun, muzzle loader, .22 rifle, trap shooting and Chu - kar hunting over dogs. Registered participants will be in a random draw- ing for more than a doz- en rifles, shotguns and archery sets after a day of outdoor activities. The Pike County Bird Hunt- ers' Club is located five miles south of Petersburg on SR 57 and just two miles west on Division Road. Watch for signs. Do not bring any fire- arms to the event. All firearms and ammuni- tion will be provided by the club. Adults are en- couraged to attend, and will have breakfast and lunch for a donation. A Hunter Education Card is required for Chukar Hunting. A Hunter Safe- ty course for youth is be- ing offered August 2-6 at the Sugar Ridge Fish and Wildlife Headquar- ters building, just off SR 61 on SR 364. Following a day of out- door activities, there will be a search-and-rescue demonstration, followed by the random draw- ing for long guns and ar- chery sets.
