Right: Charger Devin Carlisle tries to control the ball without going down while Titan Chris Spear finds the turf, with teammate Jake Romershausen looking on. Charger soccer in sectional game two The 2020 IHSA A Class 2A boys' soccer sectional, host- ed by Gibson Southern, kicks off for Pike Central on Mon- day October 5 at 7 p.m. CDT with Southridge. The winner of that game and the Wash- ington verses Princeton con- test, played at 5 p.m., meet on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The winner of that game (num- ber three) advances to play the winner of the Vincennes verses Gibson Southern game. Session tickets are $ 6, with no season tickets avail- able. Each school will receive 125 tickets to sell each night. Questions can be addressed to Gibson Southern athlet- ic director Jon Adams at 812- 753-3011 or cell 812-779 -8635. Charger Connor Young controls the ball in a crowd that includes Titans Chris Spear and Cole Walker. Chargers fall to #3 Titans Titans secure PAC title The road trip to Gibson Southern on Thursday was a 5 -1 loss at the hands of the PAC champs for the visit- ing Chargers. The Chargers trailed 1-2 in the first half and then fell on hard times offen- sively for the 1-5 loss. Gibson Southern secured the Pocket Athletic Confer- ence championship with the win. Kendric Sorgius fielded nearly 20 shots and "did a tre- mendous job keeping them in the game until halftime," ac- cording to Titan coach Chris Barthel. The Chargers packed their defenders in the box to stop the Titan attack, but al- lowed passing opportunities for the Titans, who managed to find the back of the net three more times in the sec- ond half. Charger coach Jacob West- ern said, "Against #3 ranked Gibson Southern, we came out knowing it was going to take a near perfect game. We were able to hold them 0 -0 until about nine minutes left in the first half, when they convert- ed a penalty kick. When play- ing a top team, it is so tough to bounce back from some- thing like that, and we were able to score the game-tying goal within the next two min- utes, which says a lot about our mental toughness. The goal was scored by Hunter Capehart, with an assist from Garrett Boyd. "One minute left in the first half, we were scored on again to go into the half down 2-1. We decided to go for the win the second half and play more offense. It didn't work out with them scoring a third within the first 10 minutes. We then played them even for most of the second half. They scored two late goals to finish the game with a 5 -1 loss that was not really telling of how close the game was for the majori- ty of the time. "Kendric Sorgius stepped up big time with his first var- sity start in goal. He made 16 saves, with four or five of them being exceptional. We are 9 -5 on the season and tied for third in the conference, with two regular season games left. In the sectional draw, we will play Southridge on Monday, (Sept. 5) at 8 p.m. We are excited for the chance to go out and com- pete for a championship. There are some really good teams in the sectional, but I think we are up for the task."
