Our defense was great, forcing several turnovers and cre- ated scoring opportunities for us. I was really proud of the effort from our girls and the way we looked to attack the basket and that was the difference in the game." Kya Leighty drove to the basket and finished strong to tie it 29 -29 a few moments into the fourth quarter. Princeton retook the lead momentarily after making a free throw, but Pike Central Lauren Vaughn stepped up with a contested 3-pointer to put the Chargers up 32-30, with just over six minutes remaining in the game. The Tigers were able to rebuild their lead to 35 -32, but some clutch free throws from Mal- lory Hunt and Jenna Horrall tied it back up 35 -35 with 3:45 left. Princeton led 37-35 after scoring off a turnover about a minute later, but that's when Hickey took over. Hickey finished the game with nine points, but she scored six of those in the fi- nal two minutes of the game. She did her best impres- sion of San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan and made a nice shot off the glass from the mid-elbow area to tie the score 37-37. She then gave the Char - gers a 39 -37 lead after Ken- zie Powell found her streak- ing to the bucket with a deep outlet pass. Hickey sank two free throws with less than a min- ute remaining to push Pike Central's lead to two posses- sions, 43-39. "I knew I had to get those free throws in if we wanted the win," Hickey said. "A fter that, I knew my team would step up and play good de- fense." She grabbed a steal and pulled down a defensive re- bound on the Tiger's next two possessions to seal the game. "It wasn't just me out there making plays," Hickey said. "We played as a team at the end. Coach told us to get it together and we did. We cut down our turnovers and had confidence in each other to get the win." Jayln Nelson and Lau- ren Vaughn each scored 10 points to lead the team in scoring. Powell added five, Leighty had four, and Hor- rall and Hunt each contrib- uted three. The team hosted Tecum- seh (14-5, 4-2 PAC) on Tues- day, Jan. 28, and will travel to Heritage Hills (15 -6, 6 -1 PAC) on Thursday, Jan. 30, for their regular season fi- nale. CHARGERS DRAW ALICES IN SECTIONAL Pike Central drew the toughest road possible to a sectional championship. They will face Vincennes Lincoln (16 -4, 5 -0 Big Eight) on Tuesday, Feb. 4 in the opening round of the Sectional 31 Tournament at Princeton. The winner will face Washington (17-3, 5 -1) on Friday, Feb. 7. Vincennes Lincoln and Washington are both just outside of the Class 3A Top 10 in the latest Indiana AP Poll. Each was in the other's receiving votes section. Jayln Nelson pushes the pace for the Pike Cen- tral Lady Chargers. Mallory Hickey gets a defender up in the air with a pump fake during the Lady Chargers' victory over Princeton on Thursday, Jan. 23. Jenna Horrall attacks the bucket against Princeton on Thursday, Jan. 23.
