Alex Clark led the team with 17. He was followed by Peyton Howald (10), Connor Young (7), Aden Brown (4), Hunter Traylor (2) and Kendric Sorguis (1). The freshmen bested the Warriors, 38 -33, on Monday, Jan. 27. "This was a great win for us," coach Joe Chamberlain said. "We were miss- ing Chanley tonight and that left us short-handed at the guard position. I was really pleased with everyone step- ping up and filling that void. Jeremiah has been fantastic for us the last four games. Jagar and Braden did a good job of attacking the lane and getting to the rim. They also created some out- side shots for their teammates as well. Shane Morson did a good job of han- dling the basketball and leading us on the defensive end with his communica- tion. He had all five guys talking on the defensive end in the second half. Ev- eryone else did really well handling the pressure they threw at us in their 1-3-1 and man press. That's been one of our biggest weaknesses all year and we didn't turn it over very much tonight." Jeremiah Johnson led the team with 12 points and six rebounds. Shane Morson had nine points, an assist and a steal; Braden Howald had eight points and an assist; Jagar Dent finished with five rebounds, four points, three as- sists and a steal; Trent Zimmerman had three points; and Brycen Knepp had two points and a rebound. The freshmen let one slip away against Washington, 43-37, on Wednes- day, Jan. 22. "This is a game of runs," Chamber- lain said. "They had one really good stretch in the third, assisted by our inability to box out and handle pres- sure, that gave them all the momen- tum going into the fourth. We tied it early in the fourth, but they connect- ed on 3-pointers on three straight pos- sessions, that gave them a cushion. We lost Braden Howald to fouls in the fourth and that really hurt us because he is our leader out there. These kids battled until the end, but that nine- point deficit was too much for us to overcome." Howald led the team with 10 points, four steals and four rebounds; Peyton Chanley had 13 points, four steals and four rebounds; Zimmerman had four rebounds; Knepp had four points and a steal; Dent had three points, four rebounds, a steal and three deflec- tions; and Johnson finished with sev- en points, eight rebounds and a steal. Lady Chargers' JV drops a pair By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central junior varsity girls' basketball team played well for stretches, but ultimately came up short in both of their games this past week. They lost 46 -44 in a heartbreaker to Princeton on Thursday, Jan. 23, and to Evansville North, 51-25, on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Pike Central coach Eric Knight said the contest against Princeton was a fun game, but had a hard outcome. "The girls had an unbelievable comeback late in the game, but we could not finish it off," he said. "The boys' varsity team stayed to cheer us on and with them and the band playing, it was a great environment to play in." Kahle Young was huge in the sec- ond half. "She was knocking shots down left and right, and this gave us that boost to get back into the game," Knight said. Keena Young and Tiffany Artega each had good games by attacking the paint and getting to the rim. "Liberty Taylor played her tail off," Knight said. "Princeton was much big- ger and taller. This made Liberty fight and battle the whole game." Hailey Parker went out in the second quarter with an apparent ankle injury. This left Pike Central with no subs on the bench. "She really helped us out late in the game when she said she would try to play on it," Knight said. "Hailey had a good game tonight." Delaney Welch started off the game a little cold from the floor, but she also made some big ones late. "Her shots were not falling, but she made it up on the defensive side," Knight said. "She knocked down a big shot in the fourth to get the comeback started." The Lady Chargers missed 10 total free throws. "That's hard to swallow when get- ting beat by two," Knight said. "I hate to see them lose in this game because the way the girls battled, but it was still something us coaches were proud of. We were down big and they never dropped their heads and never gave up. They fought and battled and actually had a couple chances at the end of the game to get the win." The team played really hard against Evansville North, but the score didn't look good at the end. "I was very pleased with the way the girls played and competed," Knight said. "We looked to attack off the drib- ble and did a much better job of exe- cuting the offense. North started the game out in a full court press and re- ally didn't come out of it till midway in the second half. The girls did a decent job of breaking the press. Each game, the girls get better and play with more confidence." Taylor was not worried about the size and numbers difference in the game. She came to play and never backed down. She led the Lady Char- gers in scoring with 15 and went 5 -of- 6 at the charity stripe. The Young twins both did a good job of handling the ball and the pressure. "They both have come a long way this season," Knight said, adding Arte- ga, Parker and Welch have been work- ing on attacking the basket. "They are becoming scoring threats for this team and that's something we will have to have." Other scorers against North were Kahle Young (5), Artega (3) and Welch (2).
