Birthdays Two arrested for drunken driving last week By Andy Heuring Two people were arrested for drunken driving in Pike County last week. The first was stopped for speeding, the other for a burned out li- cense plate light. Amanda Cox, 35, of 10073 S. SR 61, Oakland City, was arrested on a charge of op- erating a vehicle while in- toxicated. According to a probable cause affidavit, State Troop- er Braydon Angermeier was driving south on Highway 57 at about 6 p.m., December 30, when he met a vehicle go- ing 71 mph in a 55 zone. He said he turned around and stopped the vehicle driven by Cox. When he talked with her, he noticed she had an open beer bottle in the console. Cox said she had drank a beer before she went home and she had a few sips in the car. Cox failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the Pike County Jail, where she tested 0.163 for blood alco- hol content, which is twice the legal limit in Indiana of 0.08 percent. A Winslow woman was ar- rested at 9:30 p.m. on Mon- day, December 30 after po- lice stopped her in Winslow for not having a license plate light. Terry Cockerham, 62, of 105 S. Oak St., Winslow, was stopped by State Troop- er C.J. Boeckman after he saw her turn onto Bluff St. from North St, and noticed her license plate light was burned out. He said he could immediately smell the odor of marijuana in the vehicle when he talked with Cock- erham. Trooper Boeckman asked Cockerham and her juve- nile passenger if anyone had been smoking marijua- na. Her passenger said he had been earlier. Eventu- ally, Cockerham admitted smoking marijuana. She failed field sobriety tests and was taken to Daviess Com- munity Hospital, where she tested positive for metham- phetamine, amphetamine and marijuana. She was then taken to the Pike County Jail, where she was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, (controlled substance) with a passenger less than 18 years old. Singer and Hopkins charged with possession By James Capozella The investigation of a truck stopped at SR 64 and SR 61 late New Year's Eve resulted in several charg- es, including habitual traf- fic violator and possession, according to Pike County Deputy Paul Collier's re- port. The driver, Joseph Singer, 37, of 111 2nd Ave., Haubstadt, and passenger Kelly Hopkins, 61, were both charged with posses- sion of methamphetamine following an investigation by Officer Collier and Pike County Sheriff Sergeant Buck Seger. Hopkins was arrested when she said several con- tainers were hers and it was ascertained by officers that the capsules and clear crys- tal-like substances were methamphetamine. Collier asked Singer if he had anything to drink or taken any illegal drugs and he said no, according to the report. When Collier asked for his license, Sing- er stated it was gone for life. During a pat down for weap- ons, a case containing bag- gies, two small felt bags and several Q-tips were found. When asked what it was, Singer stated it was illegal drug items, according to the report. While searching Singer's right pocket, Collier locat- ed a blue plastic cigarette container. Singer told Dep- uty Collier, "You're not gon- na like that." A Ziploc bag containing multiple clear crystal-like rocks weigh- ing approximately 10g was found inside the cigarette container. Asked what the substance was, Singer re- sponded by saying it was methamphetamines. When Collier was speak- ing with Hopkins, she said she had nothing illegal on her, but three bags belong- ing to her contained cap- sules of Alprazolam, Hydro- codone Bitartrate, metham- phetamines and marijuana. Officers Seger and Col- lier transported the two separately to the Pike County Jail, where Sing- er was charged with ha- bitual traffic violator, pos- session of methamphet- amine more than 10 grams and less than 28 grams, possession of parapherna- lia, possession of marijua- na and possession of a con- trolled substance. Hopkins was charged with posses- sion of methamphetamine under five grams. Brames retires from Auditor's Office after 21 years Jean Brames retired last week from the Auditor's Office after working for 62.5 years. She worked for 21 years in the Auditor's Office. Prior to that, she worked for 39 years in the ACS Office and 21 years at German American Bank, before starting in the Auditor's Office in 1999 for Sharon Booth. She said she didn't have any real immediate plans for retirement, but in the future, she hoped to trav- el. Courthouse workers had a cake and punch to celebrate her retirement.
