I was shocked to hear that Stacy Holmes, 44, had passed on Christmas day. To her daughter, Kolbi King, and other family members, remember all the great times you had and share your memories with others. More memo- ries will be added to yours. We knew Stacy when Kolbi was in grade school and they stopped in the Igloo for that tasty ice cream treat when we worked there. We received no postcards this week at Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598. The Winslow Patoka River has risen from the 1.5 inch- es of rain we had over the last weekend in December and more rain to begin the January rainfall that might bring some snow flurries. Our temps have been great, where you either wore a light jacket, but your winter coat and gloves were kept in the closet and only taken out for a few days. Winter has just began on the calendar, but the next three months we may experience the win- ter of Southern Indiana. I know we have been comfortable with this jack- et weather, but you and I know that this will not stay like this for too long. Saturday, Dec. 28, in Illinois, our family Christmas was held with 13 of us who ate duck, ham, baked pota- toes, sweet potatoes, green bean cas- serole, rangoons, deviled eggs, veggie tray and desserts of cookies, fruit cake pudding, pumpkin and blueberry pies. This delicious meal was a bring-in dish and we have some great cooks because we didn't go home hungry. Presents were opened and then we all sat down with our bingo cards to win some oth- er small bingo gifts. I was the bingo caller, because I have the biggest or loudest mouth. Family members pres- ent were Mom, Mildred, George, De- by, Ethan, Sean, Joshua, Kelly, Jaca- ri, Terri Ann, Ted, Laura, Kyana and me. There was also a game of basket- ball going on outside in the sunshine. When we left Indiana, it was hazy, then in Illinois, halfway to Mt. Vernon, we drove in and out of misty showers. We didn't get anymore showers until we started back home again in Mt. Ver- non, where we were in showers, fog off and on throughout our way to the Indiana border. We came into a drop in temperatures and some breeze, but the heaviest rain came when we all got home and were asleep. Laura, Kyana and I took a detour the long way home by way of Carbondale, where it rained for a couple of miles. The Christmas decorations were delightful to see in quite a few yards all along the trip. Before Kyana went back home, her and her Pop Pop went out and got the cabbage for our New Year's meal. We had already gotten the black-eyed peas. It was real nice to see Kyana ans she is growing like a weed and pretti- er every day. There is a new restaurant that had just opened in Oakland City, and Ver- non, Dixie, Norm and I got to enjoy the Las Islas Mexican food and atmo- sphere. It's a small place, but the peo- ple are glad to see us and the food was delicious. We all got to enjoy our time together before the year was up. We hope you all had a great New Year's eve and you all stayed safe if on the roadways. Norm and I stayed at the cabin, as we sat around the wood stove and ate deer sausage and crackers, and drank our favorite amaretto, and lis- tened to the radio. Norm's new phone came in handy to let us know when the new year of 2020 was to strike the hour, as we kissed our new year into our lives. Our New Year's Day start- ed out by staying asleep for a bit lon- ger, but before 10 a.m. Then we started the ham pieces and cabbage to cook, then heated up the black-eyed peas. When this was done, we sat down to eat and saved some out for Laura to take to work. No parades to see on T V, but the New Year's eve Vienna Orches- tra was rerun on the Vincennes chan- nel 22 and it was great to listen to. I have said that if I don't write it down, then I would forget and on a Monday night, Laura had asked if I would go with her to Celebrate Recov- ery, where she was to give her testimo- ny, and her Uncle Ted came also. We heard some things in her life I had not known before and she is the bravest daughter to have to live through what others did. She is still the best friend you could ever have. The other news I forgot is that on De- cember 20, 2019, was the retirement of Lisa Poehlein from the Winslow El- ementary School and we all wish her all the happiness in the future and con- gratulations. I know all the children loved you as a teacher and a friend. Clothes hung on the line to dry or on clothes hangers is one way to dry your clothes when the dryer's heating element goes out, but it is an old dryer, so I guess it's about that time to quit. It may have gotten jealous when the drum got a new belt. Now to find that part to be installed. Christmas decorations are either al- ready taken down or about to be tak- en down and that leaves a bare place to see until another holiday comes around which is February 14, Valen- tine's Day. The stage lights are about to dim on this week, but keep an eye on family and friends. Slow down and enjoy your area. Then, as always, smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week.
