Poplar Street, Petersburg This past week was a bad week for IPL retirees as three of our working associates passed on. My condolences to their families and friends because each and every one of them was a top notch guy. It was a plea- sure to be able to know them. The men who passed were Larry Hillyard, John Lashley, and Danny Beadles. May God bless their families with His mighty love. The "Day of Caring" was a huge success because there was lots of work done at Some- body's Place. Lots of sweeping and mopping was done throughout the building and ma- ny aisles in the warehouse were cleared and reorganized. It sure looked good when we were finished. If you don't have anything go- ing on next year come out and join us. The Cruise-in at Golden Living Center was sure well attended and many fine look- ing automobiles on display. As usual there was a great meal served and some good priz- es awarded. There were so many cars it was hard to park them all so the residents could get around easily to pick their favorite car. Steve and I got to play at the Winslow Li- on's fest at Riverside park and then went to Jasper to play for Brookside nursing facili- Is it not amazing that men who can pro- duce intricate electronic mechanisms, build giant sky-scrapers, fly men to the moon and back — is it not amazing that such men often do not even know what will finally become of themselves! And what is more amazing still is that most of them do not even try se- riously to find out. They are intelligent enough to plan care- fully for the future where temporal affairs are concerned, but foolish enough to neglect their eternal welfare. They make plans for themselves in case they become ill and need additional funds for surgery, medicine and hospital care. They even make plans for their loved ones in case of death and be- reavement, but fail to ask themselves: "What will become of me after death? " Daily "the wise of this world" witness the truth of Hebrews 9:27, that "it is appoint- ed unto men once to die", and most of them know that the Bible adds: "after this the judgment". They may hope that this is but a false alarm, but they do not know. They can only wonder and worry. Hebrews 2:15 de- clares that "through fear of death" they are "all their lifetime subject to bondage". Like Adam, they run and hide from God instead of running to Him and asking: "What must I do to be saved? "Too cowardly to face up to their own grave, no hope beyond the tomb — too afraid, generally, to even discuss death. The believer in the Word of God is not left thus in the dark. He glories in the truth of the passages from which we have quoted in part above. We quote them now in full: Hebrews 2:14,15: "Forasmuch then as the children [of Adam] are partakers of flesh and blood, He [Christ] also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; "And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bond- age." Hebrews 9:27,28: "And as it is appoint- ed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. "So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time with- out [lit., "apart from"] sin unto salvation." Minutes with the Bible By Pastor Cornelius R. Stam A Place Called Heaven Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin In America about 85% of the people, to some extent, believe in the Christian faith. About three percent are Jewish and one per- cent are Muslims. They all have some con- cept of Heaven. To understand heaven, and sort out the false from the truth, one must turn to the Bible. In John 14 Jesus talks about Heaven. He tells His followers He will go and prepare a place for them and someday come for them. Christ makes it plain and simple that He is the way to Heaven. Jesus said, "I am the way the truth and the life." To get to this beauti- ful place we must believe in Jesus Christ and follow Him. There are about 10,000 religions in our world. These include many beliefs and they vary so much they all can't be right. There are about 2.1 billion Christians in our world. The Muslims claim 1.2 billion followers and there are about 14 million Jews and 350 mil- lion Buddhists. The Muslims heaven will be a lavish place where they will have servants and a source of joy will be sex with each martyr having 72 virgins. The Christian be- lieves Heaven will be a place of unending peace, joy, tranquili- ty, love and worship of God. All mourning will be over and there will be no tears. They will forever be togeth- er with their family and friends. It will be a city prepared by God for people who have ac- cepted His Son, Jesus Christ, as their Savior. God will be the light of the city and there will be no sun. There will be no need for earth- ly pleasures there. Joy will come from being one with God roaming the vast city and uni- verse in another dimension. Those who have been born again have an inner peace now that some day heaven will be their eternal home. Well it was short lived thinking I was done with appointments for awhile. We received a phone call from the hospital asking when I could come in for more blood work and ul- tra sound of my liver and lower quadrant. Now hopefully this will be the last for awhile. The food truck load was a smaller one this past week but it is getting harder and hard- er to find room for some of the produce be- cause there doesn't seem to be enough cool space to store all of it. If you need a place to donate some cash to, Somebody's Place would be a dandy place to leave some cash for your fellow man. Well, I got both of my saws running but not real good although I was able to get most of the brush cleaned up. Now I need to start on the trunk. I have a friend who is suppose to take some of the wood for his outdoor wood burner. Another guy wants some of the small pieces I cut from the brush be- cause he hasn't got a way to split some of the bigger pieces. Sounds like I may be able to dispose of most of the mess. I have trouble exercising right now be- cause I have hurt my knee and the muscles around my knee are very sore. I've never seen it fail when you exercise you hurt some- thing. It will heal and I'll be back to exercis- ing soon although my diet by itself doesn't seem to give the weight loss I have been working towards. When the Israelites reached the outskirts of the Promised Land and heard how intimidating the land was, they complained bitter- ly about that situation. De- spite God's desire to wipe His people out, Moses was able to dissuade him from punishing them in this way. Although the Israelites were not allowed into Canaan at this time, the Lord forgave them and showed them mer- cy. "In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt un- til now" (Numbers 14:19, NIV ).
