The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, September 25, 2019 B- 5 said. "They were playing hard the whole night, and figured out a way to get two goals." Willis scored the Char- gers' lone goal with 23 min- utes remaining in the first half to give the team a 1-0 advantage, but the Spartans were just too much down the stretch. "We were creating chanc- es, but could not get another goal," Western said. "South Knox played so hard, and we just didn't meet their ener- gy for all 80 minutes. I take the blame, as we have to play harder than anyone we play, and that's my job to get us ready for that." Horrall and Kahle Young split time in goal for Pike Central. Horrall made sev- en saves and Kahle Young had two saves. PIKE CENTRAL TROUNCES TELL CITY The Chargers played well in a 9 -0 win over Tell City (0 - 7-1) on Monday, Sept. 16. The Chargers have just three regular season games remaining after they hosted North Posey (5 -7-0) on Tues- day, Sept. 24. By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The returns of Carson Johnson and Jersey Mills to the starting lineup provid- ed the Pike Central boys' soccer team with the boost it needed to snap its recent slump with a narrow 4-3 win at Northeast Dubois (4-6 -1) on Monday, Sept. 23. "They provided a much needed spark to our energy, and it showed early," Pike Central head coach Jacob Western said. "They domi- nated balls out of the air and 50 -50 balls. Offensively, we created more chances to- night than we had in the past few weeks. Defensively, we were okay, making a couple mistakes but things we can learn from. I thought overall it was a good hard test and I was happy to come out with the win." Ethan Scott scored two goals and dished out an as- sist for the Chargers, and Connor Young and Nolan Nelson each scored a goal. Devin Carlisle and Carson Johnson each had an assist. Noah Whann played the entire game in goal for Pike Central. He finished with nine saves. SEVENTH-GRADE TEAM DROPS THREE STRAIGHT The Pike Central sev- enth-grade team had an even worse week. They lost to North Posey 25 -12, 25 -16 on Thursday, Sept. 19. "It's been a tough week, there's no doubt about that," Chargers' seventh-grade coach Kinsey Barrett said. "Our passing just simply isn't there right now. When we get a good pass to our set- ter, we end up getting a kill so it all comes down to that first pass. "The second set, we real- ly fought and tried to come back, but it was just too late to get back ahead. All we can do is put in the work in prac- tice and really try to come together as a team to work on our communication and being aggressive.
