The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, September 25, 2019 B- 3 By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central girls' golf season came to a close on Saturday, Sept. 21 with a sixth-place finish at the sec- tional meet at the Country Club of Old Vincennes. Vincennes Rivet finished first with a team score 360. Linton-Stockton was sec- ond with a 386 and South Knox was third with a 388. All three squads advanced to the regional meet. The Chargers finished the day with a team score of 417, and were led by Hadley Holder's 99. "I feel like the season was overall wonderful," Hold- er said. "The girls were all great and we all played very well. I was very proud of ev- eryone. I'm grateful for the memories and the bonds that I have made with the girls on our golf team, the opposing teams and just ev- eryone in the golf commu- nity." Holder, a senior, said she has a lot of great memories from playing for Pike Cen- tral, but some of her favor- ite were the camping trip the team took her sophomore season, the mini concert the team has on bus rides and when the Chargers head coach Jarrod Gideon suf- fered a surprise attack ear- lier this year from the sprin- kler system at Prides Creek Golf Course. "[The camping trip] was so much fun and something I will never forget," she said. "We were all on the putting green and the sprinkler turned on and shot Mr. Gide- on and he screamed. It was so funny we were all crying laughing." Holder said she was al- so thankful for the lessons she's learned through the game of golf. "I learned that you shouldn't sweat the lit- tle things," she said. "Golf is about being patient and calm, two things I'm not, but it has helped me enormous- ly with those." Holder was followed by teammates Madison War- ner with a 103, Emma Rain- ey with a 104, Sophie Carna- han with a 110 and Sydney Loveless with a 112. "All in all we had a sol- id and competitive sea- son," Gideon said. "I am pleased with how we played in the sectional." Vincennes Rivet's Lilly Waggoner was the low med- alist of the meet with a score of 82. Washington's Faith Dal- ton (84), Barr-Reeve's Ka- dence Claridge (91) and North Knox's Isabella May (95) advanced to the region- al meet without a team. Former Pike County resident wins Warriors Challenge at Lake Barkley By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Former Pike County res- ident Zach Boop won the Men's Elite Class at the sec- ond annual Warrior Chal- lenge at Lake Barkley on Sat- urday, Sept. 7. More than 100 runners competed on the muddy course and helped raise more than $2,500 for Operat- ing Enduring Warrior, which is charity organization with a mission to empower, hon- or and motivate America's wounded military service members. "Their mission is to hon- or military veterans for their service and empower them to face the battles that may come," Boop said. "It's a won- derful event that helps peo- ple. The event is hosted by the Kuttawa Tourist Commission and is a 5K race that pushed participants to their limits as they worked to maneuver the weaving trails and conquer military-style obstacles. The race was lengthened from a 1.9 mile race in 2018. This was Boop's second consecutive time winning the Elite Class, which in- cluded a $500 cash prize each time. Boop said he plans on com- peting in the race again next year because it's such a great cause. There are different levels of competition. There is the elite class and then the open class, which is for fun. Boop is from Richland, Ind., and graduated from South Spencer High School in 2004. He and his wife, Kayla, moved to Pike Coun- ty shortly after their first son was born. They lived in Pike County for several years, but with his wife working in Owensville, they decided to move to Fort Branch. Boop said he got start- ed in obstacle racing a few years ago when a coworker approached him about com- peting in a Spartan Race. "A fter I finished the race, I knew right away that I want- ed to do more," he said. "So I started doing CrossFit at Gym Super Sweat in Fort Branch. It has helped so much in getting better and being able to win. I enjoy pushing my body to its lim- its and challenging myself to get better. Now my whole family takes part in these types of races. We enjoy trav- eling different places togeth- er and pushing ourselves." Boop said his favorite part about the races is watching his son run the kids' com- petition and the atmosphere that the racing community provides. "I enjoy meeting all the new people," he said. "It means a lot to win and show my boys what we are capable of doing." The Boop family will com- pete in a couple more Spar- tan Races in October. "One is called the beast and it is a 13-mile race with 30 obstacles, which my wife and I are doing together for fun," he said. "Spartan has a thing called a trifecta. It's completing sprint, super and a beast in one year. That's our goal for this year. I qual- ified for the Spartan North American Championship race, but couldn't make it to it this year. Hopefully, I can next year and also make the World Championships."
