'Beulah Gray and Badges of Courage' presented at Evansville Wartime Museum Jennifer Greene, University Archi- vist at the University of Southern In- diana, will present Beulah Gray and Badges of Courage at the Evansville Wartime Museum, 7503 Petersburg Road, Evansville, on Saturday, April 27 at 10 :30 a.m. at the museum. Gray, of Otwell, corresponded with a great many troops as a war- time pen pal. She started writing to friends and others from her home- town, and shortly thereafter, re- ceived pen pal requests from other troops. Often, those she correspond- ed with would reply with a sample of their self-designed company badge. She kept all of these creative and meaningful designs and the library in Otwell has a display of some of the patches on their wall. Boxwood blight found in Indiana landscape The DNR Division of Entomolo- gy and Plant Pathology has discov- ered boxwood plants in the landscape of central Indiana infected with the boxwood blight fungus. The infect- ed plants had been purchased several years earlier from a local retail chain stores. Boxwood blight (Calonectria pseudonaviculata) is a fungal disease that infests members of the popular Buxaceae family, and is often trans- ported through the nursery trade. Hosts include Buxus (boxwood), Pach- ysandra ( Japanese spurge) and Sarco- cocca (sweetbox). Annual inspections of nursery stock by the DNR verify that this pathogen is not indigenous to In- diana, nor can it be found in nursery stock that is sourced locally. When the fungus, which can lay dor- mant in drier conditions, is present, it can be found on all above-ground por- tions of the plant and presents itself as dark leaf spots. It causes rapid defolia- tion, which typically starts on the bot- tom of the plant and moves toward the top. This fungal pathogen can move through sporulation in water and from dropped leaves. As a result, infection can spread to surrounding plants from a single infected plant. If you suspect one of your plants shows signs and symptoms of boxwood blight, call (866) NO EXOTIC (866 - 663-9684) use the information at dnr. IN.gov/entomolo. The DNR is currently surveying for boxwood blight in Indiana. To date, the DNR has not found the pathogen, except for a few interceptions at re- tail chain stores that source materials from out of state. I Love 80's Costume Dance goes over big Saturday's VFW Post 3587 "I Love 80's" Costume Dance Party featured a huge ar- ray of prizes and 80's dated activities, in- cluding DJ Donnie, food, games and, of course, music of the time. The evening started at 8 p.m. and quickly became a standing-room-only event, but many at- tendees were on their feet, getting into the mood by singing and dancing to Guns N' Roses, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Whitney Hous- ton, Van Halen, Rick Springfield, Prince, Survivor, Journey, Phil Collins, Lionel Rich- ie and Hall & Oates. Favorites at the VFW Post 3587 "I love the 80s" party and costume dance were Tony and Jodie Faith. They were part of a huge crowd that enjoyed music, games, prizes and food with no cover charge. VFW 80s attendees included Patricia Minnis, Debby Pasley and Judy Krieg.
