Stam Continued on page 2 Leaders Need to be Honored Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin In February we celebrate President's Day to honor two great American Presidents: George Washington, our first President and Abraham Lincoln who freed A frican-Amer- icans and brought our nation together. We honor these two great Americans because they believed in justice, liberty and God. They were both men of great Christian faith and looked to God in prayer for direction in those difficult times. Today, our nation has drifted far from the ideals of Washington and Lincoln. Ma- ny Americans have lost respect for the of- fice of President and no longer honor our leaders. The Bible teaches that we are to pray for those in authority. Even when we disagree with their policies, we should pray for them daily. Today we have many pressing problems and easy answers will not solve them. All Christians should turn to God in these trou- bled times and seek His help. We have ne- glected our spiritual roots and there is a de- cline in our national moral identity. Many political leaders be- lieve religious free- dom, national lib- erty and values are not important. We fail to protect the un- born and the sancti- ty of marriage. Even those who make our laws break them and shame their office of trust. The great Amer- ican dream and the importance of Christi- anity have been ignored. Terrorism, both at home and abroad, threatens our nation. It seems a new political correctness is more important than God, family and the Consti- tution. Let us pray more and criticize less for the sake of America. Prayer is our only hope in these difficult times. Our president needs our prayers and respect for the office. By Pastor Cornelius R. Stam "In hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised…" (Titus 1:2). In the Mediterranean Sea, there lies an is- land which in Paul's day had a very bad rep- utation. It's name is Crete. To Titus, a pastor sent to evangelize the inhabitants, the Apos- tle Paul wrote: "One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said. The Cretans are always liars…" (Tit. 1:12), and he added: "This witness is true" ( Ver. 13). Paul knew this to be a fact, for he had labored among them. Indeed, even secular history bears witness to this trait of the Cretans, for we are told that in ancient times to call a man a Cretan was to call him a liar. How wonderful that St. Paul had suc- ceeded in establishing a few small Chris- tian assemblies on this island and that Ti- tus was now laboring there as his succes- sor! And how reassuring that to Titus and these few believers, surrounded on every hand by people who could not be trusted, Paul could write about "eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised" ! "God is not a man, that He should lie; nei- ther the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken and shall He not make it good? " (Numbers 23:19). Thank God, millions have trusted His Word, especially about salvation through the all-sufficient and finished work of re- demption wrought by Christ at Calvary, and they have found it to be blessedly true. In dozens of passages of Scripture God has promised eternal life to those who trust in Christ and His payment for sin. "Christ died for our sins" (I Corinthians 15:3). "[He] was delivered for our offenses and was raised again for our justification" (Rom. 4:25). "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life" ( John 3:36). "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31). Take Him at His Word; His promise is good. "God, who cannot lie, promised." If I was Mork from Ork I would say Na- nu Nanu earthlings but I happen to be from the Earth and I just simply say hey. Have you had a good cloudy and rainy week? One day between rain drops my wife and I got to do some adult Easter egg hunting for mush- rooms. We were out for about three hours and didn't cover even a fourth of the forest we were in. As my wife was cleaning them and splitting them she counted about one hun- dred and sixty mushrooms. Some of them were not as big as your little finger nail but some were decent size and sure tasted good. I think maybe we can have another batch to eat soon. We had work done by three different busi- nesses and it doesn't take long to run up a sizeable investment in repairs and servic- es. We had our yard sprayed for mosquitoes and this procedure is supposed to keep them from reproducing and keeps adult mosqui- toes from sticking around. The same com- pany performed this service for us last year and it did help greatly. If you have a humidi- fier on your furnace do not forget to change your water element yearly because they build up and cause your unit to leak on floors. If they leak they can cost you again when you have to have your floor repaired. There are lots of little things home owners can do to prevent these costly repairs but most people are like me and always attend the school of hard knocks. This is a great school but some- times very expensive. Steve and I got to entertain three times last week and had a good time at all of them. We had an Easter set of songs and the resi- dents of all the nursing homes seem to real- ly enjoy our music. They thank us for coming and we always have more fun than they do. Worked the auction in Vincennes last Thursday night and again bought more stuff to try and put up. You just can't turn down those bargains when they are so cheap and no one bidding on them. Now we know why we are running out of room. On Good Friday I was blessed to be a part of the re-enactment of the crucifixion. I was asked to be Simon and was told by the Ro- man guards to help Jesus carry His cross up to Golgotha because He was so weak from His tortures. It was an honor to help portray this re-enactment because it gave you a sense of what Jesus really went through although He went through much more. Easter Sunday was a blessing because we had 24 people there for church. We had spe- cial singing, an Easter message about this day one of a new life where we shall do our best to show God's love in our hearts and to love one another. We ended our service with communion, where once again we asked God to help us make a new life starting today. We need to go out into the world and live our Christian life in such a way that our love is seen. NATIONAL DAY OF Prayer May 2 at Noon at the Pike County Courthouse "Love one another. (1 Corinthians 1:10, KJV) Lord's Prayer - First Baptist Prayer of Repentance - Pastor Tammy Powers Prayer in Unison for the Nation - Father Frank Renner O God, You are the one who gave us this promise in 2 Chronicles 7:14; "If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." Convict the church in America to wake up spiritually, agree clearly, unite visibly and pray extraordinarily for the next great spiritual awakening in America to occur in our generation. Amen.
