The Lady Chargers, who slipped to 5 -13 with their third consecutive loss, turned the ball over 22 times, 11 of which Princeton ultimately convert- ed into a total of 27 points on the of- fensive end. "We battle, but, offensively, you've got to take care of the basketball," Pike Central head coach Kyle McCutchan said. "You just have no chance to win if you don't. It's something we've been working on all season, and that's just something we're going to have to do better if we want to win ballgames." A fter Princeton took an early 2-0 lead on a pair of free throws by sopho- more Reaghan Page, Lady Charger ju- nior Lauren Vaughn hit a three-point- er to give Pike Central a 3-2 lead with 7:23 left in the first quarter. The Lady Tigers would reclaim the lead – at 4-3 – on a pair of free throws by Louis, but a three-point play by sophomore Mallory Hickey spurred the Lady Chargers back ahead – at 6 - 4 – with 6:23 remaining in the open- ing period. Princeton answered by scoring six straight points – on baskets by Louis, Sisk and freshman Cortney Dove – to take a 10 -6 lead. During that stretch, Pike Central was 0 -for-2 from the floor and turned the ball over three times. A fter a basket by senior Hailey Marchino pulled the Lady Chargers to within 10 -8 with 1:55 left in the first quarter, Princeton went on an 11- 1 scoring run to extend its lead to 21- 9 with 4:15 remaining in the second period. During that stretch, Pike Central was 0 -for-4 from the field and 1-for-3 from the free throw line while turning the ball over six times. "They just sped us up and we couldn't slow down enough," McCutchan said. "Princeton just did a good job of be- ing really aggressive, and we just re- ally didn't handle it very well." "We had opportunities," McCutchan added. "We did some things in the first half that resulted in turnovers. It was the right play, just the wrong execu- tion." A fter a putback by Marchino – of a missed shot by senior Kelsey Barrett – and a basket by Dove left the Lady Ti- gers holding a 23-11 lead with 2:37 left in the first half, a free throw by Hick- ey pulled Pike Central to within 23-12. However, after a basket by ju- nior Emma Sartore gave Princeton a 25 -12 halftime lead, a three-pointer by Sisk ex- tended the Lady Tigers' lead to 28 -12 with 5:54 left in the third quarter. A basket by junior Jayln Nelson cut the deficit to 14 points – at 28 -14 – but the Lady Chargers would turn the ball over on each of its next two possessions, which led to lay-ups by se- nior Avery Jones-Taylor and Louis that gave Princ- eton a 32-14 lead. Pike Central would bat- tle back to pull to within 15 points – at 36 -21 – but the Lady Tigers scored seven straight points – on two free throws by Page, one free throw by Louis and back-to-back baskets by Dove and Sisk – to wid- en their lead to 43-21 with 5:23 left in the contest. The Lady Chargers could get no closer than 20 points the rest of the game. Hickey scored a team- high seven points for the Lady Char- gers, while senior Becca Crow add- ed five points. Marchino, Nelson and Vaughn tossed in four points each. Freshman Mallory Hunt had three points. Hunt, Marchino and Nelson grabbed four rebounds each, while Hickey had a team-high three steals. For the game, Pike Central made eight of 35 field goal attempts – a 22.9 percent average – and hit 10 of 17 tries from the free throw line. Page added 10 points for Princeton while Dove netted nine points. Dove and Page also grabbed five rebounds while Louis had a game-high six steals. For the game, Princeton made 18 of 44 field goal attempts – a 40.9 percent average – and hit 16 of 21 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 13 times. "The way we competed defensive- ly, we were really scrappy, really banging," said McCutchan. "We just couldn't get into any type of offensive rhythm. They play such a helter-skel- ter defense that we had chances to make plays. We just didn't make the right pass." In the junior varsity contest, Hunt scored a game-high 13 points to lead Pike Central to a 48 -18 victory over Princeton. Lady Chargers freshmen Kya Leighty and Sophie Carnahan add- ed nine points and eight points, respec- tively, while sophomores Gracie Jones, Kailee Mann and Kenzie Powell tossed in six points each. Freshman Reagan Cochren led the Lady Tigers with 10 points. Lady Chargers fall 48-40 at Barr-Reeve The Pike Central High School girls' basketball team slipped to 5 -14 with a 48 -40 loss to host Barr-Reeve on Sat- urday, Jan. 19. The Lady Chargers hit five three-pointers in the first quarter – two by junior Jayln Nelson and one each by senior Hailey Marchino, soph- omore Kenzie Powell and junior Lau- ren Vaughn – to take a 15 -8 lead. With Pike Central holding a 24-20 halftime lead, Barr-Reeve outscored the Lady Chargers 12-8 in the third pe- riod to pull even at 32-32. In the fourth period, Lady Vikings sophomore Addison Ainscough scored seven points as Barr-Reeve (7-12) out- scored Pike Central 16 -12 to escape with a four-point win. "We played a solid, hard-fought game, but Barr-Reeve made a few more plays down the stretch," said Lady Chargers head coach Kyle Mc- Cutchan. Nelson scored 13 points to lead Pike Central in scoring while Vaughn added nine points. Sophomore Mallory Hick- ey and senior Hailey Marchino tossed in six points and five points, respec- tively. Kelsey Barrett had three points while senior Becca Crow and freshman Mallory Hunt rounded out the scoring with two points each. Ainscough paced Barr-Reeve with 17 points.
