Poplar Street, Petersburg Bohnert breaks school, conference records in 200 IM and 100 backstroke during PAC Championship See PAC on 3 Meyer takes first-place honors in diving By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School se- nior Natalie Bohnert won the 200 -yard individual medley and the 100 -yard backstroke in re- cord-breaking fashion while soph- omore Jenna Meyer placed first in diving during the Pocket Athletic Conference Girls' Swimming and Diving Championship on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Tecumseh. Natalie Bohnert, after finish- ing first in the 200 -yard individu- al medley with a season-best time of 2:16.47 during preliminaries on Thursday, Jan. 17, won the event during Saturday's finals with a time of 2:12.35 – more than 17 sec- onds ahead of Southridge's Claire Hentrup, who placed second with a time of 2:29.86. Natalie Bohnert's winning time in the 200 -yard individual med- ley broke her own school record of 2:12.82 – which she set during the sectional finals as a junior – as well as the PAC record of 2:13.42 set by Southridge's Mallory Miles in 2007. Then, after finishing first in the 100 -yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.08 during prelimi- naries two days earlier, Natalie Bohnert won the event during Sat- urday's finals with a time of 57.82 seconds, almost 6 -1/2 seconds ahead of Southridge's Adi Luker, who placed second with a time of 1:04.22. Natalie Bohnert's winning time in the 100 -yard backstroke broke her own school record of 58.28 sec- onds – which she also set during the sectional finals as a junior – as well her own PAC record of 59.15 seconds she set last year. "Those (school record) times were got at sectional last year, so they were going to be the tough ones to get," said Pike Central head coach Mike Bohnert, Na- talie's father. "But she was amped up and ready to go for this one. We've just got to carry on and get ready for the next big meet." Natalie Bohnert said that she felt "pretty excited" about go- ing for Miles' PAC record in the 200 -yard individual medley during Saturday's finals. "I knew that last year I had missed it by about two seconds, and then at sectional, after I beat it, I knew I could get it this year," Natalie Bohnert said. Ed Cahill photo North Knox ends nine-game losing streak with 65-61 victory over Chargers By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School senior Christian Benson scored a team- high 19 points but it wasn't quite enough as host North Knox rallied for a 65 -61 victory over the Chargers in boys' basketball action on Friday, Jan. 18. Pike Central, which fell to 2-10 with its second straight loss, had trailed by as many as eight points – at 26 -18 with five minutes left in the second period – before battling back to take a four-point lead twice – at 56 -52 and 58 -54 – late in the fourth quarter. Pike Central grapplers place seventh in PAC Championship Sophomore Isaiah Greer and ju- nior Tyler Kirby finished fourth in their respective weight classes as the Pike Central High School wres- tling team placed seventh in the Pocket Athletic Conference Cham- pionship on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Heritage Hills. Greer, competing in the 113-pound weight class, dropped a 7-5 decision to Gibson Southern sophomore Zack Ziller in the quar- terfinal round. A fter receiving a forfeit win in the first round of the consolation bracket, Greer defeat- ed Forest Park freshman Patrick Recker by a 5 -0 decision. In the consolation bracket's third-place bout, Greer dropped a 5 -1 decision to Ziller. Kirby, competing in the 160 -pound weight class, won by pin over North Posey freshman Will Weatherholt in the quarterfi- nal round before dropping a loss by pin to Gibson Southern senior Clay Singleton in the semifinals. Kirby then defeated Heritage Hills senior Levi Hexamer by a 6 -4 decision in the consolation bracket's semifi- nals. In the consolation's bracket's third-place bout, Kirby lost by pin to Tell City sophomore Nigel Kaiser. Chargers junior Ian Allen and sophomore Lane Miller placed fifth in their respective weight classes. Allen, competing in the 170 -pound weight class, lost to Tell City sophomore Alec Stahly by a 11-2 major decision in the semifi- nal round. A fter winning by forfeit in the opening round of the consola- tion bracket, Allen lost to Heritage Hills senior George Green by a 7-4 decision. In the consolation brack- et's fifth-place bout, Allen won by pin over North Posey sophomore Brady Reidford. Miller, competing in the 120 pound weight class, after picking up a win by forfeit in the first round, lost by pin to North Posey sopho- more Kaleb Elpers in the semifi- nals. Hisle, a 6 -foot junior for- ward, scored 24 of her 31 points during the first half – hitting 10 of 11 field goal attempts and going 4-for-4 from the free throw line – as the Lady Huskies took a 40 -28 halftime lead. Ten of Hisle's points came during a 15 -0 scoring run that stretched a 21-20 lead with 5:16 left in the second quarter to 36 -20 with 2:29 during which Evansville North forced the La- dy Chargers into six turnovers. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Eastern time. The win- ner will advance to the section- al's semifinal round against Princeton on Friday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time. Pike Central (5 -14) dropped a 54-50 regular-season loss to Southridge (5 -13) at home on Thursday, Dec. 6. Princeton (13-7) defeated Southridge 43-25 on Tuesday, Nov. 6, and defeated Pike Central 54-27 on Thursday, Jan. 17. In Tuesday's other first- round contest, which will tip off at 6 p.m., Eastern time, Sul- livan (13-8) will take on Vin- cennes Lincoln (18 -3), with the winner advancing to a semifinal match-up against Washington (14-6)on Friday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m., Eastern time. The championship game is set for Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m., Eastern time.
