The Press-Dispatch Pike County Planter SWCD Newsletter Quarter 1, 2019 D- 3 1220 Willow St., Vincennes • 812-882-2507/812-882-0210 • Winter Hours: Monday-Friday 8-4 Imaginative design and engineering make BROCK ® bins superior performers Whether your on-farm storage consists of a couple of bins with an auger or a whole row of bins with an integrated loading and unloading system, BROCK ® bins are the right choice for the job. Grain bin foundations are designed to secure the bins against 90 mph (145 kph) winds, even when empty. The bin anchor system supplies a strong, load bearing connection to the foun- dation. This design, combined with the foundation sealant, helps to provide a weather-tight seal. These are just a couple of ways BROCK ® bins are DIFFERENT BY DESIGN™ to offer the security of long-term storage. CISMA stands for Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area. The invasive species technician, Heather Zengler, worked hard to get the group started last year. Zengler has moved on to a new job with the DNR; we will hire someone soon. We look for ward to the new year and hope to grow this work- ing group to continue fighting local invasives. Pike County NRCS District Conservationist Vince Pitstick talks to high school students during the 2018 JA Jobspark event in Evansville. Pitstick demonstrated how erosion happens using the "sand table" built by Warrick County SWCD. Over 3,000 students had the opportunity to stop by the SWCD/NRCS booth and learn about careers in the natural resource conservation area. Hands-on rain garden workshop April 9 Learn how to judge a rain garden's health and do annual maintenance at a free rain garden workshop on April 9. The event will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT at the CTIM Theater at Vin- cennes University Jasper Campus, 961 College Ave, Jasper. Doors open at 7 a.m. Lunch will be provided, therefore registration is required prior to April 2. Pike County SWCD staff had the opportunity to coordinate a regional NRCS Area meeting that show- cased Chris and Tom Rudolph's land and the practices they have done to maximize their soil health. Pike, Posey, Gibson, Vanderburgh and Warrick County SWCDs partnered together to host a Pond Workshop in early 2018. Pond experts, along with Aquatic Control, gave presentations to help land- owners improve their pond/lake health, as well as answer the tough questions such as pond construc- tion, invasive plants and aquatic life maintenance. SWCD Invasive Technician, Heather Ziegler, gave a presentation on invasives at the Cooperative In- vasive Species Management Area (CISMA) Kick-off Meeting for Pike and Gibson counties in the Spring of 2018. While Heather is no longer with the district, the Pike-Gibson CISMA is still up and running and encourages interested parties to attend the next CISMA meeting! 2019 Pike County Plat Books coming soon!
