GO CHARGERS! from that." Baskets by juniors Jayln Nelson and Lauren Vaughn and senior Hailey Marchino gave the Lady Chargers a 6 - 5 lead with 4:43 left in the first quarter before Evans- ville North scored eight straight points – four by Hisle, three by junior guard Maddie Haynes and one by junior forward Gabby Joyner – to take a 13-6 lead with 2:37 remaining in the open- ing period. A fter two free throws by sophomore Mallory Hickey cut the deficit to 13-8, a bas- ket by Hisle upped the Lady Huskies' lead back to seven points – at 15 -8 – with 1:38 left in the first period. With Evansville North holding a 15 -9 lead follow- ing a free throw by Nelson, Hisle scored on a lay-in, off an assist by Joyner, to ex- tend the Lady Huskies' lead to 17-9, before a three-point- er by Nelson pulled the La- dy Chargers to within 17-12 heading into the second pe- riod. Trailing 19 -12 after Hisle scored to open the second quarter, Pike Central went on an 8 -2 scoring run – fu- eled by three-pointers by sophomore Kenzie Powell and Nelson and a pair of free throws by junior Jenna Hor- rall – to close to within 21-20 with 5:16 left. Evansville North respond- ed with a full-court pressure defense which sparked the Lady Huskies' 15 -0 scoring run. "We just didn't handle the pressure," McCutchan said. "They did a little bit different version of a trapping press, where they allowed us just to come into it. We did not do a great job of looking up the floor and really cutting hard up the floor. So we just didn't do a very good job." "That's on me," Mc- Cutchan added. "I have to get them in different posi- tions to get the job done. Because if we break the press, it's a ballgame. But they went on a big run just because we couldn't handle the press." Following an exchange of baskets that left Evansville North holding a 38 -22 lead, Vaughn hit back-to-back three-pointers, pulling the Lady Chargers to within 38 - 28 with 18 seconds left in the first half. A basket by Hisle with one second left in the second period, however, extended Evansville North's lead to 40 -28 at halftime. Pike Central scored the first five points of the sec- ond half on a three-pointer by Powell and a basket by Marchino to narrow the La- dy Huskies' lead to 40 -33, but three three-pointers – two by Haynes and one by Hisle – and a basket by Hisle fueled an 11-1 scoring run that stretched Evansville North's lead to 51-34 with 2:23 left in the third period. A fter Vaughn hit a three-pointer to cut the defi- cit to 51-37, the Lady Hus- kies went on a 10 -1 scoring run to open up a 61-38 lead with 5:12 remaining in the fourth period. Pike Central would get no closer than 19 points the rest of the contest. Vaughn led the Lady Chargers (5 -12) in scoring with 12 points while Nel- son had nine points. Pow- ell and Hickey added six points and five points, re- spectively. Nelson also had a team-high three rebounds for Pike Central, which was out-rebounded 20 -9 by the Lady Huskies, while Hick- ey dished out a team-high three assists. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 15 of 36 field goal attempts – a 41.7 percent av- erage – and hit seven of 10 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 17 times, eight of which Evansville North converted into a total of 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. "We did a lot of good things, got a lot of good shots, but when you turn the ball over and it leads to lay- ups, those are killers," Mc- Cutchan said. "When you give up 10, 12 points on just steals and lay-ups, that's de- flating." Haynes netted 11 points for Evansville North (8 - 11) while Joyner added 10 points. Hisle grabbed a game-high seven rebounds while Joyner dished out a game-high four assists and senior forward Arieona Gar- rett had a game-high four steals. For the game, the Lady Huskies made 25 of 43 field goal attempts – a 58.1 per- cent average – and hit 11 of 15 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 12 times. "North's a good team," McCutchan said. "They're always a good team. We knew we were going to be in for a battle. I just hate that we just kept shooting our- selves in the foot, because I think we could have made it a much better game." "But when you turn the ball over 15 to 20 times plus a game, you can't beat any- body on the varsity level," McCutchan added. "That's just basketball – if you turn the ball over, you don't get a chance to hit shots, and when you turn it over and it leads to two points on the other end, you just have no chance that way." In the junior varsity con- test, freshman Kya Leighty scored a team-high 11 points as Pike Central de- feated Evansville North 39 - 36. Sophomore Kailee Mann added nine points while freshman Mallory Hunt net- ted eight points in the win- ning effort. Freshman guard Caelynn Christian paced the Lady Huskies with a game- high 13 points.
