County Road 125 S., Petersburg Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. at the fellowship hall Velpen man who fled police now in custody By Andy Heuring Everyone involved in the case where a Velpen man wanted on a warrant fought and fled a Pike County Sher- iff's Deputy has since been arrested. Joesph A. Schaefer, who fought Pike County Depu- ty Buck Seger and stole two vehicles while fleeing police has been arrested. He was arrested last week and is being held in Martin Coun- ty on local charges there. Pike County charges also await him. His friend, Bruce Phillips, 32, initially released by po- lice, was arrested early Sun- day morning on a warrant for possession of meth and resisting law enforcement. The whole incident start- ed when Phillips, who had been visiting Schaefer at a White Oak area residence the night before, crashed in- to a ditch. The accident was reported to police by a pass- erby last Monday morning. When police arrived, they found Schaefer attempting to pull Phillips' vehicle out of the ditch. Pike County Deputy Buck Seger recognized Schaefer and knew he was wanted on a warrant. Deputy Seger attempted to take Schae- fer into custody, but he fled the scene, nearly running over Deputy Seger. Schae- fer drove to Jesse Hilden- brand's residence at 1894 S Black Run Lane, Winslow. Seger pursued him there and again attempted to take Schaefer, who is 6'2" 240 pounds, into custody, but was unable to. Schaefer then got into Hildenbrand's vehi- cle and fled. Hildebrand, in time, was arrested on charges of pos- session of meth less than 5 grams, possession of mar- ijuana, possession of par- aphernalia, maintaining a common nuisance, neglect of a dependent and unlaw- ful possession of a syringe. Police when they returned to the scene where Phillips crashed, found a bag with drugs and his car keys in it, leading to his eventual ar- rest. Hildenbrand was arrest- ed again at 2:05 a.m. Fri- day, November 25 on prelim- inary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of meth by Indiana State Trooper Hunt- er Manning. Trooper Manning said he was driving on Highway 61 when he noticed a gray truck driving 40 mph in a 50 zone and weaving back and forth in its lane. He stopped the vehicle in Winslow. He said she was talking rapid- ly. She failed field sobriety tests. A search of her vehicle found two containers in her purse. According to Troop- er Manning one had a white powder residue and the oth- er had a white crystal-like substance. Both field tested positive for meth. According to a probable cause affidavit, Hildenbrand said those were both in her purse from her arrest earli- er in the week. However Deputy Buck Seger, who was assisting Trooper Manning, said he had searched her purse ear- lier in the week and neither item was in her purse at that time. She eventually refused a chemical test and was tak- en to the Pike County Jail on preliminary charges of oper- ating a vehicle while intoxi- cated (refusal) and posses- sion of meth. By Andy Heuring An Oakland City woman and an Evansville man were arrested on charges operat- ing a vehicle while intoxicat- ed and possession of meth in separate incidents in Pike County. On Thanksgiving Day an Oakland City woman was ar- rested after she ran a stop sign on First St. in Peters- burg. Erin L. Lance, 32, of 108 S CR1225 E, Oakland City, was arrested on prelim- inary charges of posses- sion of meth, maintaining a common nuisance, oper- ating a vehicle while intoxi- cated and possession of par- aphernalia. Petersburg Police Cpl. Jar- ed Simmons said he stopped Lance after she failed to stop for a stop sign at First and Il- linois Sts. He said he "imme- diately . . . started to become belligerent and argumenta- tive" when he approached her and refused to get out of the vehicle initially. Cpl. Simmons said while talking with Lance he no- ticed her speech was ex- tremely slurred, and rapid as well as having poor man- ual dexterity. He said she al- so had irregular and uncon- trolled movement of her jaw and hands, which are typi- cal signs of meth intoxica- tion. She failed field sobriety tests. Pike County Deputy Mike Willis found a plastic bag in the driver's door storage compartment. It contained a white powder like substance and had a white powder resi- due in it as well. According to Cpl. Sim- mons' report, Lance said the powder was ground up Ga- bapentin pills. She blamed them on her passenger Eve- lyn Turner. However, Turn- er said she didn't know any- thing about them. Lance refused a chemical test and was taken to the Pike County Jail. A search of Lance found a glass pipe and a crystal like substance in a plastic bag held in her bra. Brock Alsman, 33, of 770E. Columbia St., Evans- ville was arrested at about 10 p.m. Friday after police were notified of a possible intox- icated driver in the drive- through lane at McDonalds. Pike County Deputy Sher- iff Buck Seger said he and Cpl. Simmons located the black Jeep and noticed it was driving 27 mph in a 20 zone and then saw it go left of center. Deputy Seger said while talking with Alsman he no- ticed his movements were slow and lethargic and his speech was slow. Seger said Alsman's passenger, Janette M. Russell, 36, of the same address, had similar symp- toms. Alsman failed field sobri- ety tests. K9 Officer Bleck indicat- ed drugs when he did a free air sniff of Alsman's vehicle. During a search of the vehi- cle, police found a one-hitter pipe with a burnt plant like residue in it. It was found in a cigarette pack in the pas- senger seat. Another pipe with similar residue in it was found in the driver's seat. According Deputy Seger's report, Russell told police they both smoked synthetic marijuana because it would not show up on a drug test. She said she was on bond in Vanderburgh County and Alsman had a good job. They were both taken in- to custody. Alsman was ar- rested on preliminary charg- es of maintaining a common nuisance, possession of syn- thetic marijuana, possession f paraphernalia and operat- ing while intoxicated. Russell had preliminary charges of visiting a com- mon nuisance, possession of synthetic marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. Two charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, drug charges in separate incidents
