The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, November 28, 2018 B- 5 By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School boys' basketball team opened the 2018 -19 season with a 52-44 loss to visiting Northeast Dubois on Wednes- day, Nov. 21. The Chargers led just one time – 2-0 on a basket by ju- nior Hayden Kabrick – before back-to-back baskets by se- niors Trevor Seufert and Lo- gan Dodd gave Northeast Du- bois the lead for keeps with 5:31 left in the opening peri- od. The Jeeps would extend their lead to seven points – at 19 -12 – before a basket by Pike Central senior Joey Church pulled the Chargers to within 19 -14 with 5:34 re- maining in the second quar- ter. However, Northeast Du- bois would score 10 straight points – four by Seufert and two each by Dodd, sopho- more Nick Leuken and senior Marshall Knies – to open up a 29 -14 lead with 2:11 left in the first half. (Lueken's basket came off of a pass that deflected off of Chargers' senior Judah Leath- co and went into the goal. "He gets a point on our hustle chart, for a deflection," Pike Central head coach Hunter El- liott said with a laugh. "But he gave them two points there.") Pike Central would fight back, scoring the last five points of the first half – on a three-pointer by senior Aus- tin Holder and a basket by Church – and the first three points of the second half – on a three-pointer by senior Christian Benson – to cut the deficit to 29 -22. A fter a basket by Mar- shall Knies and a pair of free throws by junior Reece Bau- er stretched the Jeeps' lead to 33-22 with 6:45 left in the third period, back-to-back baskets by junior Ethan Scott and Benson pulled the Char- gers back to within seven points – at 33-26 – with 4:33 remaining in the quarter. Northeast Dubois would extend its lead to 35 -26 on a basket by Marshall Knies, but Pike Central scored the last eight points of the third peri- od – five by Scott and three by Benson – to narrow the Jeeps' lead to 35 -34 entering the fourth period. "I thought, defensively, we kind of lost track of what we were supposed to be do- ing, and I think there were some bad choices on offense that kind of led to some fast- break, easy buckets for them," Elliott said. "We kind of dug ourselves a little bit of a hole going into halftime, but, com- ing out after half, I thought we really bounced back." "The third quarter, I thought we executed very well," Elliott added. "We played as a team. We moved the ball. When we do that, good things happen." Pike Central had a couple of opportunities to take the lead early in the fourth period, but a missed three-pointer by Leathco and two missed free throws by Scott left Northeast Dubois holding a one-point advantage. "I think if we could have gotten a two-point lead or so, we couldn't spread them out, and I think it would have been tough for them to guard us," Elliott said. "But we just couldn't get over that hump." The Jeeps, holding a 39 -38 lead after Kabrick hit a pair of free throws with 5:14 left, wid- ened its advantage to 42-38 on a three-point play by Bauer. Leading 46 -44, Northeast Dubois hit six of eight free throw attempts to close out the contest. Benson scored a game- high 16 points to lead Pike Central while Scott added nine points. Holder tossed in seven points while grabbing a team-high five rebounds. Kabrick and junior Mario Fields tallied four points each while Church rounded out the scoring with two points. Fields and Scott both had three assists while Scott had a game-high two steals. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 18 of 39 field goal attempts – a 46.2 percent av- erage – and hit five of 10 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over seven times. Bauer paced Northeast Du- bois with 14 points while al- so dishing out a game-high four assists. Seufert added 10 points and grabbed a game- high nine rebounds. For the game, Northeast Dubois out-rebounded Pike Central 30 -18. The Jeeps scored 14 points off of 14 of- fensive rebounds while the Chargers scored eight points off of five offensive rebounds. "Rebounding kind of hurt us tonight," Elliott said. "That was one area that I was kind of concerned with and they had several second chance opportunities. That's some- thing we're going to have to work on." "Sometimes the ball bounc- es your way, sometimes it doesn't," Elliott added. "We can't blame the refs or blame how the ball bounces. We had opportunities. We've just got to learn from it and get bet- ter." In the junior varsity con- test, sophomore Stephen Krieg scored 10 points while sophomores Ethan Gorby and Sean Hanselman added eight each to lead Pike Central to a 44-39 victory over Northeast Dubois. Gorby – who led both teams in assists (three) and steals (four) – and junior Col- in Craig grabbed six rebounds each. Sophomore Eli Leuken scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Jeeps.
