B-2 Sports Wednesday, November 28, 2018 The Press-Dispatch win games like that," Mc- Cutchan added. "There's no- body that's on our schedule that you can play that way and win." The Lady Chargers out-rebounded Tell City 27- 24, scoring 10 points off of 10 rebounds on the offensive end, but made just 14 of 49 field goal attempts – a 28.6 percent average. From three-point range, Pike Central hit only one of 15 tries. "We missed some shots," McCutchan said. "We had a lot of open looks tonight. We just couldn't get them to go down." "It kind of reminded me of the fourth quarter of the Boonville game (when the Lady Chargers went 4-for-13 from the field – in- cluding 0 -for-5 from beyond the three-point arc – in a 55 - 48 loss) but we were kind of in that mode all game," Mc- Cutchan added. "We had a lot of open looks, and we could get really whatever we wanted in man or zone, but you've got to knock shots down to win close games, and we just didn't hit enough shots tonight." Trailing 4-2 midway through the first quarter, back-to-back baskets by se- nior Hailey Marchino and sophomore Mallory Hickey gave Pike Central a 6 -4 lead with 3:23 left in the period. Following ties at 6 -6, 8 - 8 and 10 -10, Tell City se- nior Elizabeth Kehl hit a three-pointer to give the La- dy Marksmen a 13-10 lead with 4:51 remaining in the second quarter. A fter an exchange of bas- kets by Nelson for Pike Cen- tral and by junior Elizabeth Thomas for Tell City, back- to-back baskets by Marchi- no and Hickey gave the La- dy Chargers a 16 -15 half- time lead. Trailing 18 -17 in the third quarter, the Lady Marks- man scored six straight points – two by Hayes and four by senior Grace Kreile- in – to take a 23-18 lead with 1:50 remaining in the peri- od. With Tell City holding a 25 -20 lead, back-to-back baskets by Marchino and Hickey pulled the Lady Chargers to within 25 -24 with 12 seconds left in the third quarter. However, Kreilein fired up a desperation shot from just inside the mid-court line that swished through the net as the horn sound- ed, giving the Lady Marks- men a 28 -24 lead heading in- to the final period. During the fourth quar- ter, Pike Central hit just two of 11 field goal attempts – in- cluding one of five tries from beyond the three-point line – but were 7-for-8 from the free throw line while forc- ing the Lady Marksmen into committing four turnovers, two of which Pike Central converted into a total of five points. "We picked up the intensi- ty in the fourth quarter, but that's not good enough," Mc- Cutchan said. "If we could have done that for four quar- ters, we'd have been in fine shape. "When you play in a hole and you don't compete for four quarters, it's tough to win a game." "We knew we were go- ing to have to compete and play hard, and we just didn't bring a true, competitive na- ture with us tonight," Mc- Cutchan added. "If we'd of played like we did against South Knox or Wood Memo- rial, I think we would have won this game." Marchino and Nelson both scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Pike Central. Hick- ey and Vaughn added six points each while junior Jenna Horrall tossed in four points. Crow, meanwhile, dished out four assists, while Marchino and Vaughn both had three steals. The Lady Chargers were 7-for-10 from the free throw line while turning the ball over 10 times. Kreilein added nine points for Tell City – which improved to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the PAC – while grab- bing a game-high eight re- bounds and dishing out three assists. Kehl tossed in five points and had a game- high four steals. For the game, the Lady Marksmen made 17 of 35 field goal attempts – a 48.6 percent average – and hit three of eight tries from the free throw line while turn- ing the ball over 16 times. "Thirty-six points is not going to win many varsity games," McCutchan said. "Big shots late helped, but we've got to hit big shots from the first quarter on. We got really what we want- ed on offense, open shots all night. We're a good-shoot- ing team, but we just didn't show it all the way through tonight." In the junior varsity con- test, freshman Mallory Hunt scored 15 points, soph- omore Kailee Mann netted 14 points and freshman Kya Leighty tallied 10 points as Pike Central defeated Tell City 48 -34. With the win, the Lady Chargers JV team improved to 3-2. Ed Cahill photo By Janice Barniak Gibson Southern High School senior Jordyn Gra- ham said a lifelong love has led her to basketball, but following her faith brought her to sign a national letter of intent on Thursday, Nov. 15, to play basketball with Welch College, a Christian college she said felt like home after a campus visit only a few weeks ago. "I kind of grew up in a basketball family," said Graham, whose father, Randy, coached high school girls' basketball at Pike Central and Tecum- seh, and currently serves as an assistant coach at Gibson Southern. Graham played basket- ball in fifth grade at Peters- burg Elementary School, and in sixth and seventh grades at Pike Central Mid- dle School before transfer- ring to Owensville, where her mother, Tammy, teach- es. Her grandmother joked she's had a basketball in her hands since she was a baby. "I feel like God gave me the talent to play the sport," Graham said. "I can see the court pretty well and get to the inside when I need to." She said she's worked on her game this year by pay- ing attention to advice from coaches. Right now, Graham said she's focusing on defense and learning to be quicker on her feet. She said she's learned a lot playing bas- ketball. "No matter what, you have to keep working through, go your hard- est. You're not just making yourself better, you're mak- ing your team better." Graham plans to study exercise science and Chris- tian ministries at Welch College, which is located in Gallatin, Tenn., north of Nashville. Graham is the daugh- ter of Tammy and Randy Graham, of Fort Branch, and the granddaughter of Charles and Nancy Baxter, of Washington.
