Poplar Street, Petersburg Two Chargers receive PAC All-Conference honorable mention for football Two Pike Central High School players – senior Braxton Rice and junior Connor O'Neal – received honorable mention on the Pocket Athletic Con- ference's All-Conference Team for football. Rice was awarded hon- orable mention accolades as an offensive lineman, while O'Neal received honorable mention as an offensive end. Named to the All-Con- By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Leading Brown County 46 -45 with 18.7 seconds left in the consolation game of the 11th Annual Loogootee Tip-Off Classic on Saturday, Nov. 24, the Pike Central High School boys' bas- ketball team literally circled the wag- ons. A fter calling a timeout when senior Austin Holder had trouble inbound- ing the ball from the baseline at the Eagles' end of the court, Pike Central head coach Hunter Elliott huddled with his team. When the Chargers returned to the floor, Holder waited for the referee to hand him the ball as his four teammates – forming a diamond around the free throw circle – began running in a clock- wise circle. Junior Ethan Scott subsequently broke off from the rotation toward the sideline and caught the inbounds pass from Holder. Scott then tossed the ball back to Holder. Fouled with 13.6 seconds left, Hold- er – shooting a one-and-one – made the first free throw to give Pike Central a 47-45 lead. A fter Holder missed his second at- tempt from the charity stripe, the Char- gers hung on for the two-point victo- ry when Brown County freshman Car- ter Kelly missed a three-point shot at the buzzer. "We circled the wagons there," said Elliott, whose team – which dropped a 50 -39 first-round loss to Rock Creek Academy – improved to 1-2. "I saw it this summer at a coaches clinic. I said, 'You guys want to do it? ' and they said 'Yup.' So we went with it." "It's one of those plays where the de- fense doesn't really know how to react, and we just break off of it," Elliott add- ed. "They all know where they're sup- posed to go after that. It worked out for us. We got the ball in, and even ran a little bit of time off the clock before we got fouled." Trailing 38 -32 with 1:09 remaining, the Lady Char- gers scored four straight points – on a pair of free throws and a basket by ju- nior Jayln Nelson – to close to within 38 -36 with 24.7 seconds remaining. A free throw by Hayes upped Tell City's lead to 39 -36 with 23.5 seconds left. "I'll be honest – we just didn't truly compete to- night," said Pike Cen- tral head coach Kyle Mc- Cutchan, whose team slipped to 3-3 overall and 0 -1 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. "We played. We played fairly hard. But that's different than flat-out competing, such as diving on the floor. When we're do- ing that, we're tough." "When we're not, we're just kind of going through the motions and, at the varsity level, you can't Quade Morton scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Pike Central Mid- dle School seventh grade basketball team to a 44-27 victory over visiting South- ridge on Monday, Nov. 26.
