A fter a 50 -yard touch- down run by Morton with 2:54 left in the first half ex- tended Pike Central's lead to 34-0, the Chargers added an- other touchdown when Gish scored on a 26 -yard run as time expired. Gish ran for the two-point conversion, giving Pike Central a 42-0 halftime lead. Morton scored his third touchdown of the game when he returned the kick- off to start the second half into the end zone. Gish's two-point conversion run was good, extending the Chargers' lead to 50 -0 with 6:40 left in the third period. Playing with a running clock through the remain- der of the contest, Tecum- seh's offense was on the field for the rest of the game, scoring a touchdown and a two-point conversion with 24.1 seconds left to make the final score 50 -8. With the win, the Char- gers' seventh grade team finished the season 2-3. "This team is special," Chargers head coach Jer- emy Howald said. "Their effort and tenacity is sec- ond to none. Every one of those boys have the heart of a champion and give their all on every play. They all played extremely well." For the game, the Pike Central defense held Tecum- seh to just one first down, while the Braves commit- ted four first-half turnovers. "Our defense was huge," Howald said. "We shut Te- cumseh down. Jayden Clark, our smallest lineman – we call him Lil Man – had an outstanding game. Don't let his size fool you. He is so aggressive that they had to SPORTS BRIEFS Registration for Girls' Charger Cub basketball league being accepted The 2018 -2019 Girls' Charger Cub basketball league is conducting reg- istration for girls in grades two through four who are interested in participating. The cost is $40 for the first child and $ 35 for each additional child in the same family. Registration forms are available at both Pe- tersburg and Winslow ele- mentary schools. The Girls' Charger Cub basketball league will hold three practice dates – on Sunday, Nov. 4, Sun- day, Nov. 11, and Sunday, Nov. 18 – and four game dates, which will be played on Sunday afternoons at Petersburg Elementary School. Red Ryder BB gun shoot set for Oct. 20 The Sons of the Amer- ican Legion's Red Ryder BB Gun Shoot will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, starting at 1 p.m., at the American Legion Post 256 in Oakland City. The entry fee is $2 per round. Cash or meat priz- es will be awarded for ev- ery round. No pellet or better quality guns will be permitted. Loaner guns will be available for use. In addition, Chargers se- niors Austin Holder and Hayden Kabrick received honorable mention as field players while Chargers ju - nior Noah Whann received honorable mention as goalie. "I was very happy with how many players we had recognized," said Pike Cen- tral head coach Jacob West- ern, whose 13th-ranked Chargers finished 12-5 over- all and 5 -2 against PAC foes. "It is always nice to get some recognition at the end of the season for all the hard work the kids put in. All of these guys were extremely de- serving." Scott, who received hon- orable mention as a field player last season, scored a team-high 17 goals while dishing out a team-high 12 assists for a total of 46 points. "He led the conference in points for the regular season even when, most games, he was being covered by one or two guys all the time," West- ern said. Benson, meanwhile, had seven goals and eight assists for a total of 22 points. "To finish in the top 10 in the conference in points playing primarily on defense is incredibly impressive," Western said. Kabrick also scored a to- tal of 22 points with six goals and 10 assists. "He is a true center mid that was much more valu- able than even his stats showed," Western said. Holder netted seven goals and dished out seven assists. "He is one of the hardest workers I have seen," West- ern said. "He would attack and defend from the wing for all 80 minutes." Whann allowed just 16 goals in 16 games while compiling a PAC-leading 182 saves for the season. "The leader of our team, he gave us a chance at the end in every game he played," Western said. Also named to the All-Conference First Team as field players were Car- son Leibering of Heritage Hills; Justin Barthel of Gib- son Southern; Jorge Soto of Southridge; Jonathan Es- cobar of Southridge; Diego Martinotti of Gibson South- ern; Garrett Barthel of Gib- son Southern; Sam Schnie- ders of Heritage Hills; and Luis Flores of Southridge. Named to the All-Confer- ence First Team at goalie was Mitch Priar of Gibson Southern. Also receiving honor- able mention as field play- ers were Tanner Tichenor of North Posey; Luke Leffert of Heritage Hills; J.D. Ker- ber of Forest Park; Preston Risinger of Gibson South- ern; Brendan Murphy of Gibson Southern; Logan Bryant of North Posey; Jeo- vany Dubon of Southridge; Michael Donoho of South Spencer; Jake Novotny of Gibson Southern; Blake Padgett of Tell City; Lucas Esarey of South Spencer; and Avery Gick of Gibson Southern. Also receiving honorable mention as goal- keeper was Zach Wahl of Forest Park. Gibson Southern finished first in the PAC, going 7- 0 while compiling a regu- lar-season record of 13-2-4. Heritage Hills was 6 -1 in the PAC and 13-3 overall; Pike Central was 5 -2 in the PAC and 12-4 overall; Southridge was 4-3 in the PAC and 8 -5 -1 overall; Forest Park was 3-4 in the PAC and 6 -9 -1 overall; North Posey was 2-5 in the PAC and 2-13 overall; South Spencer was 1-6 in the PAC and 3-13 overall; and Tell City was 0 -7 in the PAC and 1-10 overall. In the eighth grade game, Tecumseh shut out Pike Central 40 -0. "We knew coming into this game that it was going to be tough," Howald said. "Tecumseh's team was un- defeated and has beaten some really good teams. They ended their season undefeated as they pretty much took it to us." "The thing is, we didn't play badly," Howald add- ed. "We were in position to make plays on defense all night. We just couldn't effec- tively or consistently bring down their back. The size difference was substantial and we did not hit low." With the loss, the Char- gers eighth graders slipped to 1-7. Pike Central closed out its season by hosting Tell City on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
