The Press-Dispatch GO CHARGERS! end Levi McCarter – fell in- complete, giving the Char- gers a 4th-and-10 from its own 35 -yard line. Utterback then connected on a pass to junior wide re- ceiver Connor O'Neal, who raced 65 yards into the end zone for an apparent touch- down with 3:52 remaining. However, a holding pen- alty against the Chargers nullified the score and – coupled with an unsports- manlike penalty – backed Pike Central up to its own 10 -yard line, where it faced 4th-and-35. "If that score stands, you're talking the score is 27-20, with all our timeouts and 3:52 left, and we can flip the field position," Chargers head coach Dave Stephens said. "I wasn't a fan of the (holding) call then. I really wasn't a fan of the call once I saw the film. To me, when a referee makes a call, it has to be pretty blatant. I think, in crunch time, especially, you'd like to see the players decide the game." On the next play, a short pass by Utterback intended to Leathco was picked off by North Posey junior lineback- er Rylee Thompson at the Pike Central 11-yard line. Two plays later, Lowe scored on a 14-yard touch- down run that – following Tichenor's point-after kick – extended the Vikings lead to 34-13 with 2:57 left. With the win, North Posey improved to 5 -4 overall and 4-3 in the PAC. "I can't fault our kids," Ste- phens said. "I'm disappoint- ed in the outcome. I'm proud of my coaches. I'm proud of my team. I felt like they did well. They came in and com- peted. They did the things that we asked them to do." "I think it was just kind of, with the depth, it wore us down, not necessarily phys- ically, but more on the men- tal aspect," Stephens added. "We were just making silly mistakes that I'm not sure we would have made other- wise." Fields led the Chargers offensively, rushing for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, while Utter- back – making his first start at quarterback – completed six of 13 pass attempts for 46 yards with one interception. Stephens said that it was not known until Friday if Fields – who left last week's game with an injury – would be available to play at North Posey. As a result, Utterback had gotten all the reps with the first team during prac- tice all week. "Mario didn't get ulti- mately cleared until Friday during the day by his doc- tor," Stephens said. "Once we knew we had Mario, we had a plan for a couple of weeks where we wanted to go with a combination of Lars and Mario. The plan was to go heavily with Lars and then, in certain running situations, bring Mario in." O'Neal caught three pass- es for 34 yards and gained 12 yards on four rushing at- tempts, while senior running back Eli Coleman gained 33 yards on 12 carries, caught two passes for eight yards and completed on pass for 12 yards. Freshman running back Wyatt Frasure rushed for 24 yards on four carries. Pike Central will open sectional tournament play at Vincennes Lincoln on Friday, Oct. 19. The Alices, who have won six straight games, are 7-2 overall and ranked No. 12 in Class 3A. "They're playing really well," Stephens said. "They play in a tough conference. I know that their team is go- ing to pass the football. I also know that their best player from a statistical standpoint (senior wide receiver Spen- cer Corrona) got injured last Friday and they don't expect him to play. But they've got a 6 -foot-4 receiver (senior Isaac Lane) on the outside. They'll pass the ball." "At the end of the day, think out big thing for them is going to be how we match up with the deep ver- tical pass," Stephens added. "We're trying to do some things to eliminate that." The Alices play their home football games at In- man Field, which is located at 2134 Washington Street, adjacent to Gregg Park.
